Claremore man dies in 2-vehicle crash on Highway 20

CLAREMORE — A Rogers County man died Wednesday night in a two-vehicle crash near Will Rogers Downs on Highway 20.

According to the report of OHP Trooper Leonard McMillan, 67-year-old Charlie Bird of Claremore was attempting to leave Will Rogers Downs in Claremore shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday.

As Bird pulled out from the stop sign onto State Highway 20 going east, he pulled into the path of a westbound vehicle — a 2012 Dodge Durango, driven by Misty Kay Edwards-Matheson of Claremore — which struck Bird’s vehicle, according to the OHP report.

Following the collision, Bird was pinned in his vehicle for one hour before being extricated by members of the Tri-District Fire Department using the jaws of life.

He was then transported to Claremore Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced death from head, trunk external, trunk internal, arm, and leg injuries.

Edwards-Matheso also was transported to Hillcrest Claremore Hospital, where she was treated and released with head, trunk external and arm injuries.

Edwards-Matheso’s passenger, 12-year-old Beverlee Caraway, was treated and released from Claremore Regional Hospital with head and leg injuries.

All parties were wearing their seatbelt at the time of the collision, according to the report.

OHP Trooper Leonard McMillan is with Troop B, Rogers County Detachment of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
