CHS Academic Team prepares for state tournament

CLAREMORE —

The Claremore High School Academic Team recently won the 5A area tournament and have qualified for state competition in February. Students have been practicing their speed and researching possible questions in hopes of earning a spot in the championship for another year.
Earlier this season, the team qualified for a trip to nationals after placing in the top 15 percent of the national qualifier.
“When you get to the state and national level, it’s really about speed,” said Kay Strain, team sponsor.
She said competition questions are presented one after another, therefore students cannot compete unless they answer quickly.
The team is currently selling popcorn to raise money for the trip to nationals in early March. Students plan to host a community bingo night fundraiser in late February as well.
“We were able to choose from three different venues and have chosen to go to Chicago,” said Strain. “Competition lasts three nights but we’re hoping to stay an extra night to sightsee a little bit.”
