Museum hosts preview during homecoming

CLAREMORE —

The Claremore Museum of History & Welcome Center will host a special preview for Claremore High School alumni to coincide with this year’s homecoming.
The preview will take place from 1-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28. Refreshments will be served.
The museum is the site of the old Will Rogers Library at 121 N. Weenonah, which was built in 1936.
Since then it has served as the city of Claremore Fire Administration building and the Lynn Riggs Museum.
“We’ve been working on it for a year and a half,” said Tom Pool, chairman of the executive committee. “Now we are in the process of remodeling and setting up the exhibits.”
Among the exhibits on display at the preview will be the old Claremore High School.
Another will feature All State football players from the beginning of the program until 1972, the year the new high school was built.
Former coach Frank Mobra is expected to be among the guests at the event.
Former coaches, players and their families are encouraged to attend.
Another exhibit will be the Yale Theater, which will show films about people from Claremore.
In addition to the indoor exhibits, several antique vehicles will be on display around the museum.
Some of them may have actually delivered students to the high school that once stood across the street.
“Everything is shaping up nicely; the workers have been busy,” said Larry Larkin. “The museum is going to showcase attractions, activities and people from Claremore and the surrounding area. It’s something the city can be proud of.”
While the preview is not a fundraiser, donations will be accepted.
“The funds have been raised to complete the remodel; now we need to raise money for the exhibits themselves, as well as operating costs,” Pool said. “We are off to a great start and we’re excited to have people come out and take a look at it.”
The museum is expected to officially open before the end of the year, according to Pool.
