Students volunteer assist county Election Board during election

Mark Friedel Staff Reporter The Claremore Daily Progress Fri Nov 09, 2012, 06:05 AM CST

CLAREMORE — Area college, high school and home school students worked with Rogers County Election Board Secretary Julie Dermody Tuesday night as precinct votes were brought in by election inspectors. The volunteers received and helped process the votes from all 36 precincts.

“I decided to use student workers because they enjoy being a part of the process,” said Dermody. “They do a great job and want everyone to feel like their vote is being counted.”
Dermody said the election board provided a smooth early voting process for citizens this election.
“The longest voters had to wait in line was only about 15 minutes,” she said.
Out of the 4,700 community voters, 10 percent showed up for early voting on Monday.
This year the county had 189 precinct officers who maintained polling locations, prepared roster and street indexes and assisted voters in the voting process.
“Last election, the officers were not at all thanked for the time and effort they put in and it’s sad,” said Dermody. “Without them there would not be an election.”
Commuinty members are invited to show appreciation during Rogers County Election Board’s open house Dec. 6 from 2-6 p.m. Free food and drinks will be provided.
Election offices are located at 415 West 1st Street, across from the new court house in Claremore.
