School security panel makes recommendations

OKLAHOMA CITY — Members of a state task force created after the deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school will make their final recommendations to the state Legislature to help prevent similar attacks in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Commission on School Security, which meets Tuesday, is considering 39 proposals developed by its 22 members. Experts on school security and terrorism met with the panel to discuss the safety of public school students.

The proposals include more mental health treatment for troubled students, mandatory training for school staffs on emergency preparedness and a school security institute that would coordinate and standardize school security procedures statewide.

The task force was formed after a deadly shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., killed 20 children and six school employees.
