Claremore soldier killed in Afghanistan

CLAREMORE — Department of Defense officials have confirmed the death of a Rogers County soldier, killed over the weekend in Afghanistan.

Jon Townsend, 20, of Claremore, was one of four soldiers killed Sunday in what is being called an “insider” attack in the Kabul Province.

Officials say Afghan police killed four American soldiers coming to their aid after a checkpoint attack on Sunday.

This was the third such assault by government forces or insurgents disguised in military uniforms in as many days, officials say.

Townsend is survived by his wife. He was a 2011 Claremore Sequoyah graduate and served as a United States Army infantryman.
