5A REGIONAL: No. 2 Memorial rolls past Claremore, 91-34

TULSA — The No. 2 Tulsa Memorial Chargers overpowered Claremore and advanced to the Class 5A Regional Championship with a 91-34 win Friday night.

Claremore, who had three seniors quit in the regular-season finale at Tahlequah, fought tooth-and-nail for 32 minutes and showed a lot of heart down the stretch in the season finale.

Despite trailing 22-2 at the end of the first quarter, the Zebras (0-23) found their offense in the second quarter as senior guard Daniel Lauer came off the bench to drain a three-pointer and a running baseline jumper.

Randy Williams, a junior guard, also contributed with four straight points while senior forward Grady Caton and junior guard Hunter Garroutte had two points each as Claremore trailed Memorial, 38-13 at halftime.

Memorial, though, poured it on in the final 16 minutes, outscoring Claremore, 53-27.

Memorial’s Demari Edwards tallied a game-high 19 points and A.J. Cockrell added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Chargers to victory.

Spencer Walden paced the Zebras offense with nine points – all coming in the fourth quarter on two treys, a field goal and a free throw. Lauer had eight points, Caton added seven and Dylan Landers chipped in two in their final high school games.

Memorial advanced to the 5A regional championship Saturday night against Skiatook.

Area players earn All-Region baseball awards
The awards keep piling up for Verdigris High School graduate Blake Battenfield.
After being named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Large East team earlier this week, Battenfield and numerous other players from Rogers County earned OCA All-Region accolades.
Battenfield was joined by his teammate, Ryan Hurd, who was a senior outfielder/shortstop for the three-time Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals.
