SOFTBALL: No. 6 Texas edges No. 24 Tulsa, 1-0

AUSTIN — After seven scoreless innings between No. 24 Tulsa and No. 6 Texas, international tiebreak rules had to be instituted to decide a winner in the championship game of the Texas Invitational, a 1-0 Longhorn win in eight innings, Sunday at Red & Charline McCombs Field.

 

Junior Aimee Creger (6-1) went the distance, pitching seven shutout frames, scattering five hits with eight strikeouts, and absorbed her first loss of the year for the Golden Hurricane (11-4). Blaire Luna (7-0) struck out 16 batters with no walks, and allowed three hits in complete game to earn the win for the Longhorns (16-1).

 

Tiebreak rules place a runner on second base to begin the inning. Each team laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance its runner to third base, but Texas’ Gabby Smith singled up the middle to score Stephanie Ceo for the winning run.

 

“There were two pretty dominant pitchers out there. It was tough on both sides,” Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. “In a game like that, it’s going to come down to one to two opportunities. I was proud of the way Aimee pitched, especially since we used her so much this weekend.

 

“I think this just reaffirms the type of team we have when we’re playing against competition like that. It was a very good weekend. We were able to get a win against the No. 6 team in the country, and we took care of business in all our other games.”

 

Senior center fielder Caitlin Everett, senior shortstop Samantha Cobb and junior second baseman Shelby Blanton each recorded a hit for the Hurricane.

 

Creger and the TU defense fought out of trouble in the second and sixth innings, when the Longhorns had a runner on third each time. In the second after Texas put runners on the corners with one out, Creger caught the next two batters looking to end the inning. In the sixth, after a two-out infield single put runners on the corners again, Creger induced a groundout to second put stall the threat.

 

Cobb singled to left field with two out in the first inning. Tulsa’s next baserunner came in the sixth when Blanton led off with a single to left field, and Everett followed with a bunt base hit to move Blanton up to second base, but a pair of striekouts ended the inning.

 

Tulsa went 4-1 at the Texas Invitational, including a 7-4 win over the 6th-ranked Longhorns on Friday. TU also picked up two victories over Utah State, 8-0, and 3-0, and a win over Lamar, 11-3.



The Golden Hurricane returns to action next weekend, March 1-3, at the UT Arlington Invitational, where it will face Lamar, Creighton and UT Arlington.

    Oklahoma State Baseball will be holding a pair of camps in June for players in grades 1-8, and registration is now open.
     
    Session I of the camp is June 17-19, with Session II set for June 24-26, and cost for each camp is $200. Camp runs from 9 a.m.-noon each day.

    Keegan Bradley had no thoughts of a course record, or the possibility of a 59, after consecutive bogeys in the middle of his opening round at the Byron Nelson Championship.

    Until his 136-yard wedge shot on his final hole Thursday.

    “It was going right at it. (A 59) crossed my mind for a second, and it would be unbelievable if I buried this,” Bradley said. “But I had 3 feet to shoot 60. I was actually very nervous, uncomfortable over it and thank God I made it.”
