Cox sparks Lady Zebras past Oologah

CLAREMORE — Kaleigh Cox’s fourth-quarter spark helped fuel the Class 5A No. 15 Claremore Lady Zebras to a 41-36 victory over Class 4A No. 20 Oologah Saturday night in non-conference action.

The sophomore point guard penetrated to the basket and hit a driving layup with 2:10 left in the game to give Claremore a 38-35 lead.

Then, with 30 seconds left, a short-range jumper by Cox put Claremore up 40-36 and sealed the win.

Cox tallied eight points as Claremore improved to 10-8 on the season.

Oologah kept it close in the second half, cutting Claremore’s lead to 28-25 at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Mustangs rallied from a 20-13 halftime deficit using the outside shooting of Jessica Wolf and Taylor McElhaney.

Wolf and McElhaney each a three pointer as Oologah trailed Claremore, 28-23 with 1:20 left in the third quarter.

McElhaney’s offensive putback on the ensuing possession sent hope to the Oologah bench heading into the fourth quarter.

However, Claremore’s inside presence of Megan Martin went to work and extended the lead back to 30-26.

Martin, who finished with 17 points, made four straight points early in the fourth quarter as Claremore kept adding to its lead.

Cox’s driving layup with 5:13 remaining pushed Claremore’s lead to 34-28.

Oologah stayed on Claremore’s heels and cut the deficit to 34-33 on Emily Pashley’s layup with 3:29 remaining.

Claremore, however, outscored Oologah, 7-3 down the stretch to even the series this year with the Lady Mustangs.

Earlier this year, Oologah defeated Claremore, 50-47.

Along with Martin and Cox, Miranda Taylor finished with eight points and Cali Reynolds added four for the Lady Zebras.

Brinley Evans led Oologah with eight points, while McElhaney and Alex Edinger had seven apiece. Pashley also had six.

  • Verdigris run-rules Claremore, 9-1

    The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals claimed summer bragging rights over the Claremore Zebras with a 9-1 victory Thursday night at Legion Field.
    Blake Battenfield tossed a complete game, fanning six Zebras in five innings. He gave up four hits and allowed a run in the bottom of the second inning.

  • Deaton named Oologah boys hoops coach

    Elk City’s Jim Deaton was hired earlier this month to lead the Oologah boys basketball program.
    For the past nine years, Deaton has guided the Elk City Elks in Class 4A.
    Under Deaton’s leadership this past season, the Elks were 10-16 and reached the area tournament.
    Deaton has been coaching for more than 20 years and has taken three different schools to the state tournament.

  • Price was Right in Green Country All-Star Game

    It was a clean sweep for Gold over Blue in a trio of Green Country All Star Basketball games Thursday at the Catoosa Indian Activity Center.
    The second boys game was the most competitive with the end result a 75-65 Gold victory.  Gold won 67-52 in the first boys game and the girls game was a 70-39 romp.

  • SUMMIT LEAGUE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: ORU comes from behind to win

    No. 1 Oral Roberts scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat No. 4 Southern Utah 2-1 in game two of the 2012 Summit League Baseball Tournament, presented by Currington Mortgage, Thursday night.
     
    ORU (34-22) had just two hits through seven innings, but got three in the eighth, including a double by Jose Trevino to score Brandon Healy and tie the game. Cam Schiller followed with a single down the left field line to score Trevino, which proved to be the go-ahead run.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Kansas knocks out Texas

    The Texas Longhorns were sent home from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 4-2 loss against the Kansas Jayhawks on Thursday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    Kansas (22-33) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first and the Longhorns were never able to make up the deficit. It marked the first time Texas was eliminated after two games since 2001. In 2010, Texas went 0-3 in pool play at the tournament.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: K-State eliminates Oklahoma State

    Oklahoma State’s season came to an end Thursday at the Big 12 Baseball Championship as eighth-seeded Kansas State defeated the No. 5-seed Cowboys, 11-5, at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    In dropping its sixth consecutive game, OSU fell to 32-25.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: OU stuns No. 3 Baylor 3-2

    Another Big 12 Championship game ended in walk-off fashion on Thursday for the No. 25 Sooners as Evan Mistich legged out an infield single to score Erik Ross in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over No. 3 ranked Baylor.

    I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere, just put it in play,” said Mistich.  “I was just trying to get down the line as quick as aI could and beat the throw.”

    Julius Erving strolled through the 76ers locker room as Philadelphia celebrated beating the Celtics to set up another Game 7 in Boston.
    "It brings back all the memories,'' the Hall of Famer said after the Sixers forced the first seventh game between the old rivals since he teamed with Andrew Toney to lead Philadelphia past Boston and into the 1982 NBA finals. "It seemed like it always came down to them. ... Coming out of the East, (it) was always Boston or Philly.''
