BASEBALL: Wichita State clips ORU, 5-4

TULSA — Chris Williams hit his second home run of the season on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as the Oral Roberts baseball team fell to long time foe Wichita State, 5-4.



The contest was back and forth all game, with the Golden Eagles taking a 2-0 lead following Williams' solo shot in the in the bottom of the fourth inning, sending the first pitch of the at bat out of the park.



ORU crossed the plate to get on the board in the home half of the first inning Matt Brandy drove a pitch into center for a single, scoring Logan Domenico from second. Domenico had previously led the inning off with a single in the hole between first and second.



Wichita State got on the board with their first run in the top of the fifth as Erik Harbutz scored on a sacrifice fly by Mikel Mucha. After a quick bottom half of the fifth, the Shockers took the lead in the sixth.



Casey Gillaspie led the inning off with a triple into the right field corner, followed by a strikeout to Johnny Coy. However, Coy reached first as the ball got away from the catcher. Two batters later, both Gillaspie and Coy crossed the plate on a single by Harbutz to take the lead, 3-2.



Fortunately, the lead was short lived as the Golden Eagles answered in the bottom of the inning.



Jose Trevino reached to lead the inning off on a dribbler that was misplayed by the Shocker shortstop. With two outs and Trevino standing on second following Tyler Boss' first career hit in an ORU uniform, Nate Goro singled to drive in Trevino.



Goro was one of four Golden Eagles with two hits, including Domenico, Cho and Trevino. Brandy, Boss and Williams recorded the other three hits for ORU.



The home team regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Brandy drove in Cho on a sacrifice fly to left field. Cho was parked on third after singling with one out, moving to second on a Trevino single, then advancing to third on a passed ball.



But in the top of the eighth inning, the Shockers took the lead for good. With Tanner Dearman at first following a walk, Gillaspie ripped a double to score Dearman from first. Two batters later, Gillaspie scored for the second time in the ball game on an unusual 6-4-3 groundout.



ORU threatened in the bottom of the ninth with runners on second and third with two outs, but Brandon Peterson entered the game to strikeout the final batter for the Shocker save.



Freshman Guillermo Trujillo got the start on the bump for ORU and pitched well, going 5.1 innings and striking out three. Nathan Garza came on in relief in the sixth inning, earning the loss, with Wichita State's Cale Elam picking up the win.



The Golden Eagle hit the road for their first road trip of the season as they travel to Ruston, La., to face Louisiana Tech. First pitch on Friday is schedule for 6:30 p.m.

  • OU's dominant victory a shining example of how tough Sooners are in softball

    On the first day Oklahoma softball coach Patty Gasso thought it was better to go with Michelle Gascoigne over Keilani Ricketts against Arkansas’ bats, the Sooners beat the Razorbacks by five runs.

    A day later Gasso had the same thought. OU prevailed by 13 runs.

    Oklahoma State University played catch up the entire game of Saturday’s series finale with West Virginia at Allie P. Reynolds, and never could quite get over the hump.
    The Cowboys would respond after each Mountaineer score but it wouldn’t be enough as they lost the finale 5-4 on Senior Day.

     It was an outcome unlike any in the 29 years of the Lake Eufaula Classic, and a bruise different than any player has ever departed with.

    Officials, following the second serious skirmish of the game, walked off the field and the game was called, the South leading the North 12-10 at Paul Bell Stadium.
