Claremore Sequoyah’s road to the playoffs got a whole lot muddier Friday night against Metro Christian.
Quarterback Matt Woolslayer ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more, leading the Patriots to a 28-3 District 3A-5 victory at Pope Athletic Complex. The loss left the Eagles 4-5 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Woolslayer completed 18 of 27 passes for 216 yards and ran for 41 yards on 27 carries in frustrating Sequoyah. The Eagles suffered three turnovers, 108 yards in penalties and gained just 58 yards with two first downs in the second half.
Metro Christian improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 inside the conference despite a sometimes sputtering offense. The Patriots survived with help from the home team.
A shanked Eagle punt for minus two yards gave Metro the ball at the 44, leading to Woolslayer’s one-yard plunge midway in the first period. Sequoyah came right back and seemed fit for a tie with a nine-play drive to the Patriots‘ 12. But running back Hunter Webster fumbled the ball away to Metro’s 280-pound lineman Zach Webb and Sequoyah never got closer to the end zone.
Metro Christain motored 98 yards in eight plays to lead 14-0 with 1:43 left in the first half. The series featured Woolslayer’s arm and he located Brody Wagner for a 28-yard scoring screen pass down the sideline.
Sequoyah quickly scrambled into position for its only score. Quarterback Daniel Moniz connected 23 yards with Blake Muns in reaching the Metro 31, then found Garret Shepherd for 14 to the 17.
Three plays gained zero yards and junior Sam Lederman entered to toe a 34-yard field goal 27 seconds before halftime.
The Patriots pushed across two touchdowns in the final quarter to seal the deal. The Eagles’ fumble at the their own 47, setting up Metro’s third drive to the end zone. Four crucial Sequoyah penalties aided the Pats’ march that was climaxed by Woodslayer’s four-yard power burst over the goal line.
Moniz’s intercepted pass led to the visitor’s last touchdown. Cash Jackson returned it 21 yards to the 18 and Woodslayer immediately fired to Danny Burke for the TD with 5:29 left.
