SOFTBALL: No. 5 Texas A&M clips Arkansas, 2-1

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The University of Arkansas softball team narrowly fell to the Texas A&M Aggies, 2-1, on Friday in College Station, Texas.

Arkansas (19-8) was led by senior captain, Chelsea Cohen, in the circle. She went six innings, gave up one run, on one hit, while striking out one. She received the no decision as Arkansas fell on a game-winning single from Cali Lanphear in the seventh inning. Texas A&M starter Mel Dumezich went seven innings and gave up one run on four hits. She struck out nine and received the win.

“I thought we played excellent tonight,” head coach Mike Larabee said. “Chelsea threw a great game, basically a one-hitter. We played great defense and I thought that we competed well.”

The Aggies struck first as Meagan May shot a solo-homerun over the leftfield wall in the bottom of the first. Cohen retired the next two batters including a strikeout of Dumezich to end the inning.

Arkansas evened it up in the second as Clarisa Navarro led off the inning with a walk. She would come around to score three batters later as Gee lined a double off of the rightfield wall. Her 19th RBI of the year tied the score at one.

Cohen cruised through the Aggie lineup in the next three innings as she retired nine of the ten batters she faced. Her only casualty came when she hit Dumezich on the elbow. She rallied and got Cali Lanphear to groundout to end the fourth.

The Razorbacks showed life in the fifth as Sierra Bronkey reached on a fielder’s choice, Wallace reached for the third time of the night on a walk and then two batters later Chloe Oprzedek walked to bring up Nicole Schroeder. She gave a great effort but went down swinging and the Hogs stranded three.

The Aggies got their first leadoff runner of the game as Jenna Stark led off the bottom of the fifth. She was hit by a pitch and advanced to first. Two batters later Cohen faced Amber Garza with one out, she lined a ball down the first base line and it was robbed by Wallace. She used full extension to nab the ball out of the air. The sophomore then doubled up the Cassie Tysarczyk at first to end the fifth.

Cohen continued to work into the sixth and received more help from her defense. Brittany Clopton started the inning by popping out to Oprzedek at third. She charged the ball and made a nice play to catch it in foul territory. After a groundout to Navarro at short for out number two, May grounded a ball to second and Bronkey made a magnificent play to throw out the catcher. This ended Cohen’s day in the circles as she went six innings, gave up one run on one hit, while striking out one.

Wallace started a two-out rally in the top of the seventh as she singled to rightfield. This was the third hit of the day for the Hogs. Canfield followed the single with a hit of her own, but, Wallace was thrown out trying to advance to third.

Kimmy Beasley came on to work the seventh and walked Nicole Morgan to start the bottom half of the inning. Dumezich then bunted pinch-running Allison Garrett to second. With one out, Lanphear approached the plate and hit a bloop single to rightfield. This scored Garrett from second base and ended the game. Arkansas fell, 2-1, at Texas A&M.

Next up for the Razorbacks will be the second game of SEC play against Texas A&M. Game two will start at 4 p.m. tomorrow from College Station.

Area players earn All-Region baseball awards
The awards keep piling up for Verdigris High School graduate Blake Battenfield.
After being named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Large East team earlier this week, Battenfield and numerous other players from Rogers County earned OCA All-Region accolades.
Battenfield was joined by his teammate, Ryan Hurd, who was a senior outfielder/shortstop for the three-time Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals.
