Oologah drops swim meet to Fort Gibson
December 2, 2009 — With every breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle stroke made the Oologah Mustang boys and girls swim team fell farther and farther behind.
But the ultra positive Oologah head coach Charles Kerber turned and said “We are going to get there. We have already knocked six seconds off of our last time against them.”
The boys team suffered a 118-46 loss and the girls fared only a little better losing 101-54.
“I am happy with the kids, very happy. We are very young. We are going to get there eventually,” Kerber said. “The older kids are swimming well and the whole bunch is so dedicated we can’t do anything, but get better.”
The highlight of the evening came in the 200 meter individual medley. Oologah’s Mikela Connella set a new school record at 2:47.72.
This wasn’t the first time for the shy junior to break the school record in this event.
“I broke it twice last year and now once this year,” Connella said.
Connella is a homegrown swimming product. She took up the sport in the third grade. She began swimming lessons shortly thereafter and continued moving up until she reached the high school program.
Melissa Srok from Oologah took first place with a time of 1:07.76 in the 100 meter freestyle.
Oologah finished second in the girls 200-meter medley relay.
The relay team consisted of Samantha White, Erin Crews, Mikela Connella and Melissa Srok.
The boys 200 meter medley team finished second with a time of 2:10.58. The team consisted of Seth Whalen, Ryan McMillan, Matt Tesson and Tyler Vogt.
Ryan McMillan earned second place in the 200-meter individual medley coming in at 2:28.25.
Srok finished second in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 30.14. She also took first place in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:07.76.
Connella grabbed second place in the 100 meter butterflym, finishing with a time of 1:19.13.
The girls 200-meter freestyle relay team finished second in 2:04.71. The team consisted of Connella, Shelby Schaffer, Kinsey Nidey and Srok.
The boys 200 meter freestyle equaled the girls team with a second place finish as well. They posted a time of 2:00.90.
Erin Crews brought home a second place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke with 1:34.36.
Ryan McMillan finished second in the 100 meters breaststroke with 1:16.01.
The girl’s 400-meter Freestyle relay team of White, Nidey, Crews, and Shaffer took second with a posted a time of 5:29.50.
“These kids have to be very motivated to do this sport. It takes so much dedication. The parents are so helpful they are running this meet, so I can coach that excites me,” a still positive Keber said.
