November 25, 2009 — It has been a rough emotional week for the Panthers. And even more so for Foyil’s boys head coach Jason Ward.
Ward’s wife, Colleen, passed away last week. As a show of love Ward’s players wore headbands. The headbands read in memory of Colleen Ward.
With their angel above them the Lady Panthers took to the floor to open the 2009-10 season.
In a game that looked like it was their first, the Foyil girls team scratched and clawed to a 47-43 overtime win over South Coffeyville.
The Lady Panthers, who won only two games last year, battled poor shooting and turnovers to get the win.
They shot 17-41 from the field and committed 30 turnovers during the game.
“This group works their tails of to get better,” head coach Brad Jordan said.
“The have great attitudes and they want to get better,” he added.
The Lady Panthers were down six at the half. And didn’t see their first lead until the 5:52 mark of the third quarter at 29-27.
The fourth quarter was a see saw battle with the lead changing back and fourth.
Foyil found themselves down quickly. As the Lady Lions scored first in overtime.
The biggest lead the Lady Lions could muster was two points.
But with 38 seconds to go Brittany Snyder took control. Her two pointer tied the score at 52 apiece.
With just 17 seconds left she scored again to give the Lady Panthers a 54-52 lead.
Snyder then added two free throws with just seconds on the clock to give Foyil a 58-53 win.

Boys
The Panthers battled the much larger Lions. And after taking a 14-11 first quarter lead they fell behind at halftime 19-27.
Just at the moment it appeared Foyil was going to be run out of the gym. They began a slow, but steady comeback.
They drew within eight as the fourth quarter began at 31-39.
Cole Clausen’s steal with 7:09 left in the game cut South Coffeyville’s lead to 33-40.
Dakota Chaiss hit two free throws and Foyil had pulled to within five, 35-40.
Brett Moore’s three and a two pointer by Chaiss had the Panthers within one.
Foyil stayed within two as both teams traded baskets. But a Foyil turnover with 38 seconds left allowed the Lions to score and obtain some breathing room at 43-47.
“I haven’t been around much and we are still learning, but the kids hung in there and gave us a chance to win,” Ward said.

Verdigris run-rules Claremore, 9-1
The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals claimed summer bragging rights over the Claremore Zebras with a 9-1 victory Thursday night at Legion Field.
Blake Battenfield tossed a complete game, fanning six Zebras in five innings. He gave up four hits and allowed a run in the bottom of the second inning. -
Deaton named Oologah boys hoops coach
Elk City’s Jim Deaton was hired earlier this month to lead the Oologah boys basketball program.
For the past nine years, Deaton has guided the Elk City Elks in Class 4A.
Under Deaton’s leadership this past season, the Elks were 10-16 and reached the area tournament.
Deaton has been coaching for more than 20 years and has taken three different schools to the state tournament. -
Price was Right in Green Country All-Star Game
It was a clean sweep for Gold over Blue in a trio of Green Country All Star Basketball games Thursday at the Catoosa Indian Activity Center.
The second boys game was the most competitive with the end result a 75-65 Gold victory. Gold won 67-52 in the first boys game and the girls game was a 70-39 romp. -
SUMMIT LEAGUE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: ORU comes from behind to win
No. 1 Oral Roberts scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat No. 4 Southern Utah 2-1 in game two of the 2012 Summit League Baseball Tournament, presented by Currington Mortgage, Thursday night.
ORU (34-22) had just two hits through seven innings, but got three in the eighth, including a double by Jose Trevino to score Brandon Healy and tie the game. Cam Schiller followed with a single down the left field line to score Trevino, which proved to be the go-ahead run. -
BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Kansas knocks out Texas
The Texas Longhorns were sent home from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 4-2 loss against the Kansas Jayhawks on Thursday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Kansas (22-33) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first and the Longhorns were never able to make up the deficit. It marked the first time Texas was eliminated after two games since 2001. In 2010, Texas went 0-3 in pool play at the tournament. -
BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: K-State eliminates Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State’s season came to an end Thursday at the Big 12 Baseball Championship as eighth-seeded Kansas State defeated the No. 5-seed Cowboys, 11-5, at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
In dropping its sixth consecutive game, OSU fell to 32-25. -
BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: OU stuns No. 3 Baylor 3-2
Another Big 12 Championship game ended in walk-off fashion on Thursday for the No. 25 Sooners as Evan Mistich legged out an infield single to score Erik Ross in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over No. 3 ranked Baylor.
I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere, just put it in play,” said Mistich. “I was just trying to get down the line as quick as aI could and beat the throw.” -
Celtics, 76ers prepare for another seventh game
Julius Erving strolled through the 76ers locker room as Philadelphia celebrated beating the Celtics to set up another Game 7 in Boston.
"It brings back all the memories,'' the Hall of Famer said after the Sixers forced the first seventh game between the old rivals since he teamed with Andrew Toney to lead Philadelphia past Boston and into the 1982 NBA finals.
