Southern Naz women grit out 64-60 win over Henderson State

BETHANY — That gust of air you just felt; that was a breath of relief from Southern Nazarene as SNU picked a big win with a 64-60 defeat of Henderson State Saturday afternoon.

The Crimson Storm (5-7, 2-4 GAC) did something it didn't do Thursday night by holding on to a late lead. Southern Nazarene took a 50-49 lead with 8:27 left to play and never gave it back.

“We were able to get the loose balls and rebound the basketball tonight,” said SNU Head Coach Derek Dorris. “It was great having Aminata (Fall) back as well. That's a big help on the glass and allows us to get out of man a bit sometimes.”

SNU got a team-high 20 points and five rebounds out of Oumoul Thiam as she went 7-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Annie Kassongo added 16 points and five rebounds while Aminata Fall had six points and 13 boards.

“Oumoul is just so explosive,” said Dorris. “She can split a double team or see a crease and get to the rim. She is just so balanced and that creates so many matchup problems for other teams.”

Southern Nazarene shot 41.5 percent from the floor and held the Lady Reddies (8-3, 3-2 GAC) to just 35.6 percent shooting from the floor. SNU also out rebounded HSU 41-35.

SNU led by as much as nine late in the first half as it held a 27-18 lead with 3:22 in the first, but Henderson State went on a 10-0 run to end the half and took a 28-27 lead into intermission. The Lady Reddies pushed the lead out too seven twice with the final one coming at the 15:39 mark at 41-34. The Storm answered with seven straight to tie it at 41, but HSU pushed it back to 49-44 with 9:57 left.

The Storm then got back-to-back treys from Thiam and Katie Beebe to lead 50-49 and never trailed from there.

Southern Nazarene will now travel to Arkansas-Monticello, Thursday, for a 5:30 p.m. GAC contest.
