RSU basketball advances to SAC Tourney Semifinals

Lady 'Cats face LCU at 1 p.m. today; Hillcats battle OCU at 8 p.m.

SHAWNEE — The Rogers State University men's and women's basketball teams advanced to Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals today at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee.

The No. 14-ranked Lady 'Cats defeated Wayland Baptist University, 73-56 in their first-round game. Logan Froese and Sierra Cornwell tallied 17 points each to lead the Lady 'Cats offense.

With the win, the Lady 'Cats moved to the semifinals to face Lubbock Christian University at 1 p.m. today at OBU. LCU beat St. Gregory's in the first round matchup, and also are 1-1 this season against the Lady 'Cats.

On the men's side, the Hillcats rallied to a 87-83 win over Mid-America Christian University late Thursday night in the first-round of the SAC Tournament.

J.C. Hartzler, a freshman guard from Tulsa, converted a layup with 2:38 remaining to put the Hillcats up 79-78.

The win over MACU advances the Hillcats to the semifinals against Oklahoma City University at 8 p.m. tonight at OBU.

Robinson Opong led RSU with 23 points and Donald Williams added 20.

The winner of the RSU-LCU women's game will battle OCU-John Brown in the championship at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of the RSU-OCU men's game will take on LCU-John Brown at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the championship.

    The awards keep piling up for Verdigris High School graduate Blake Battenfield.
    After being named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Large East team earlier this week, Battenfield and numerous other players from Rogers County earned OCA All-Region accolades.
    Battenfield was joined by his teammate, Ryan Hurd, who was a senior outfielder/shortstop for the three-time Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals.
