Tanner Smith has turned the Verdigris Cardinals into a scoring machine.
In three non-conference games, Smith has 65 carries for 628 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The 5-foot-11, 210-pound senior running back played a huge role in the Cardinals’ 41-14 win over Perkins-Tryon last Friday night.
Smith punished Perkins-Tryon with 29 carries for 251 yards and six touchdowns. He also had four tackles and forced a fumble.
This Friday, the Cardinals begin their quest toward a District 3A-5 championship with a road trip to Blackwell.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Blackwell is 0-3 on the season and has only scored 27 points on offense in those three non-conference games.
Since falling to Perry, 69-27 in the season opener, Blackwell has lost to Newkirk, 21-0, and Chisholm, 14-0.
The Blackwell defense has allowed 104 total points for an average of 35 per game.
On the flip-side, the Cardinals offense has scored 123 total points (41 per game) and their defense has given up 28 points (9.3 per game).
The brunt of the Cardinals’ damage on offense has come in their running game, fueled by the hard-nosed blocking in the trenches.
On the year, the Cardinals have 137 carries for 976 yards and 14 touchdowns.
