Rogers State University senior Sierra Cornwell was named Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-SAC, the conference office announced on Monday.
The Preston native shares the defensive player of the year title with Lubbock Christian’s Nicole Hampton. Cornwell tallied the honor for the second straight season. The defensive specialist ranks second in the NAIA in steals and leads the SAC in steals on the season with 119 swipes, 50 more than anyone else in the conference.
Cornwell was one of six Hillcats to receive conference honors. Logan Froese, a senior from Claremore was named second team all-conference. In the regular season finale, Froese became the RSU all-time scoring leader with 1, 137 career points. She averages 10.7 points and a team best 5.6 rebounds per game.
Senior Leah Smith was named third team all-conference as she led the Cats in scoring for the second consecutive season with 11.7 points per game.
Kelby Fritz, of Vinita, and Ariani Silva were named to the honorable mention squad. Silva averages 9.2 points per game and played in all 30 of the Hillcats games this season. Fritz dished out a team-best 76 assists on the season, starting in 27 of her 29 games played.
Junior Taylor Jeffs, of Oologah, played in all 30 games this season and was named to the SAC All-Academic team.
Oklahoma City’s Lauren Gober and LCU’s Hampton were SAC Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Year. Coach of the Year went to Latricia Trammel of Oklahoma City, Katie Hall of Oklahoma City was named Newcomer of the Year, Freshman of the Year went to Aryionna Taylor of St. Gregory’s, and the Sportsmanship Award winner was Anna Parish of John Brown.
Joining Hampton, Gober, Hall and Cornwell on the First-Team All-Conference are Leticia Silva of St. Gregory’s and Desiree Jeffries of Oklahoma City.
Froese was joined on the second-team by Kelsey Canavan and Emily Atkins of Lubbock Christian, Kourtni Williams of Mid-America Christian, Zbeyda Aremi of Oklahoma Baptist and Angeleigh Davis of Wayland Baptist.
Third-Team All-SAC selections went to Smith along with Sierra Shipley of John Brown, Haley Burton of LCU, Kalie Lucas of SGU and Parris Price of MACU.
The honorable mention list includes Silva and Fritz, Jessica Lankston of OCU, Rocio Medrano of USAO, Janell Beacham and Charity Fowler of OBU, Laura Castillo of WBU, Kelsey Hoppel of LCU and Parish.
Jeffs was joined on the All-Academic team by JBU’s Parish; LCU’s Canavan, Hampton, Burton, Hoppel. Callie Sandusky and Amanda Perry; MACU’s Sarah Martin, Kelsie Dutton, Kourtni Williams and Chelsea Key; OBU’s Fowler and Meredith Treat; OCU’s Tiffany Bellamy, Kayla McKenzie, Gober and Hall; SGU’s Silva, Lucas and Heather Anderson; USAO’sPaige Pulliam, Tashina Ototivo, Krista Ford, Amber Chaney, Celeste Smith, Rashelle Carr and Christina Scott; and WBU’s Davis.
