Sequoyah eliminated in 4A Regional Tourney

SEQUOYAH — Claremore Sequoyah’s shooting touch disappeared in the final quarter, allowing Cleveland to win the regional tournament consolation opener 34-29 Thursday at Olan Graham Field House.

The Lady Eagles ripped off 10 consecutive points to build a 29-24 lead, taking the five-point edge on Callie Wangsgard’s basket early in the fourth period. However, Sequoyah could not score again and made just one field goal in 11 attempts during the deciding frame.

Wangsgard and Savannah Mathews paced the Eagles with eight points each while Hunter Thompson grabbed 10 rebounds, but the home team wilted under the 20-point effort of Cleveland ’s Jordyn Roe. Roe made 9-of-11 free throws, including 4-of-6 in the fourth quarter.

Seqouyah entered the last period leading 27-24 after holding the Tigers without a hoop in the third quarter. Cleveland had missed 13 straight attempts until Roe gunned a trey, giving the Tigers a 29-27 lead with 4:51 remaining. But the visitors scored the final 10 points of the game and Roe broke a 29-all tie by converting two foul shots at 3:43.

Cushing used deadly shooting and a unusual defense to frustrate Claremore Sequoyah, 77-52 in the Class 4A regional tournament consolation opener Thursday at Olan Graham Field House.

The Tigers shot 62 percent from the field and slapped a box-and-one defense on Sequoyah shooting ace Blake Mills. Mills cranked out four straight three-point baskets in the first quarter from NBA distance, then super quick Jai Conley was assigned to follow the sophomore and stick to him.

The ploy seemed to work as Mills missed his next five shots and finished with 15 points compared to 19 for senior Alex McGoffin.

Nick Tanner topped Cushing with 27 points while Drew Wilson backed him with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles punched in 10-of-27 three-point shots, but just 1-of-3 free throws.

A Cushing coach was heard telling his team to ”contain the three, we can’t stand those threes’’ during a third quarter timeout and Sequoyah lived and then died by the trey.

Cushing ran away after connecting on 16-of-22 second-half field goal tries. McGoffin scored all 12 of Sequoyah’s third-period points, but the Eagles faded from contention, falling behind 60-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

The home team did lead 24-22 early in the second frame when sophomore Logan Tacker knocked down a three ball, but Bingham Hightower answered for Cushing and the Tigers deployed a 20-2 scoring rampage to settle the issue.

    On the first day Oklahoma softball coach Patty Gasso thought it was better to go with Michelle Gascoigne over Keilani Ricketts against Arkansas’ bats, the Sooners beat the Razorbacks by five runs.

    A day later Gasso had the same thought. OU prevailed by 13 runs.

    Oklahoma State University played catch up the entire game of Saturday’s series finale with West Virginia at Allie P. Reynolds, and never could quite get over the hump.
    The Cowboys would respond after each Mountaineer score but it wouldn’t be enough as they lost the finale 5-4 on Senior Day.

     It was an outcome unlike any in the 29 years of the Lake Eufaula Classic, and a bruise different than any player has ever departed with.

    Officials, following the second serious skirmish of the game, walked off the field and the game was called, the South leading the North 12-10 at Paul Bell Stadium.

    On Saturday, the game between the Cowboys and No. 1 Delgado (La.) was anything but as Connors beat the Dolphins 3-1 to capture the South Central district championship and a berth in next week’s NJCAA College World Series.

    On a day devoid of tension and rumors, all nine drivers who made attempts on the second and final day of Indianapolis 500 qualifications made it into the 33-car field, led by two young Americans - Josef Newgarden and Graham Rahal - who easily had the two fastest cars on the track.
