RB Smith leads Cards against Newcastle

VERDIGRIS — The Verdigris Cardinals believe in pounding opponents with their ‘dynamic duo’ at running back in Tanner Smith and JD Hanslovan.

Smith and Hanslovan combined for 245 yards and two touchdowns in the Cardinals’ 40-7 season-opening road win at Stilwell.

Verdigris carried 41 times for 282 rushing yards against Stilwell.

Smith led the way with 20 carries for 201 yards and two touchdowns.

This week, the Cardinals’ potent ground attack gets a tough home opening matchup against Newcastle.

In Week 1, Newcastle rolled past Pauls Valley, 42-13, scoring all 42 points in the first three quarters.

The Racers led 42-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Last year, Newcastle finished 5-6 under head coach Keith Bolles.

The Racers’ offense is led by senior receiver Stanton Rupp (5-11, 160) who had 269 yards and three touchdowns last fall.

Defensively, junior linebacker Dylan Adams (5-11, 185) accounted for 33 tackles and is expected to anchor the Racers’ again this season.

Note: Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Area players earn All-Region baseball awards
The awards keep piling up for Verdigris High School graduate Blake Battenfield.
After being named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Large East team earlier this week, Battenfield and numerous other players from Rogers County earned OCA All-Region accolades.
Battenfield was joined by his teammate, Ryan Hurd, who was a senior outfielder/shortstop for the three-time Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals.
