Bulldogs rally past Zebras in OT

CLAREMORE — The Claremore Zebras played perhaps their best game of the season — despite falling to Skiatook, 53-47 in overtime Tuesday night at the Claremore High School Gym.

Though the loss extended the losing streak to 17 games, the Zebras had the Bulldogs on the ropes for 36 minutes.

Claremore controlled the lead right up until A.J. Surritte’s three-pointer in the fourth quarter put Skiatook ahead 46-44 with 1:12 remaining.

Brett Russell knocked down a pair of free throws as Claremore tied the game at 46 to force overtime.

In the extra four-minute period, Skiatook outscored Claremore, 7-1, scoring all its points at the free throw line.

Neither team made a field goal in overtime. Skiatook was 7-of-8 from the free throw line, while Claremore hit 1-of-2 charity shots.

Throughout the game, Claremore led 11-10 in the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime. The Zebras continued to lead 32-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Relying on a slow-tempo motion offense, Russell and Angel Fulgencio paced Claremore’s scoring with 12 points each.

Surritte and Jesse Haynes had 41 of Skiatook’s 53 points.

  • Texas Longhorns men's track coach retires

    Texas men's track coach Bubba Thornton is retiring after 18 years and 12 conference championships.
    According to a statement from the school on Monday, Thornton and athletic director DeLoss Dodds mutually agreed to terminate the coach's contract effective Aug. 31. The Longhorns won this year's Big 12 indoor and outdoor championships and finished sixth at the NCAA outdoor championships.
