Zebras go 2-1 in Texas

Claremore’s baseball Zebras posted a 2-1 record last week on a spring break getaway to San Antonio.

They returned home to prepare for the Zebras’ Four-State Festival this weekend at Legion Field.

In the meantime, a 5 p.m. game was scheduled Tuesday in Tulsa against Memorial High School.

Last week, the Zebras dropped their first game, 12-0, to San Antonio Central Catholic.

“That was probably a good lesson for us,” Zebra coach Russell Walden said Tuesday.

“We weren't mentally prepared to play and we got embarrassed. The rest of the week, we went to the field with a different mindset and it showed.”

The Zebras bounced back to defeat San Antonio St. Anthony, 18-3, and stopped Texas Military Institute, 5-0.

“We are playing good defense and our offensive production is picking up,” Walden said.

“Pitching is the area that we are really needing to see some improvement.”

Walden mentioned that junior lefthander Landon Coyle and sophomore righthander Jimmy Williams had good outings. “And we expect good things from them in the near future,” Walden said.

“Josh Jennings (senior righthander) may have solidified a spot as a closer in the win against TMI.”

With the successful week, Claremore improved its record to 4-8.
