‘Friday Night Heartbreaker’

Big pass play before halftime lifts Jones past Sequoyah, 10-3

SEQUOYAH — With a 3rd and 22 at the Claremore Sequoyah 35 yard line, Jones quarterback David Cornwell came through in the clutch for the Longhorns.

Cornwell’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Randal Case proved to be the game-winner that lifted the Longhorns past Claremore Sequoyah, 10-3 in the Class 3A State Quarterfinals Friday night at Pope Athletic Complex.

“One big play was the difference in tonight’s outcome,” Sequoyah head coach Jody Iams.

“We heard all week how good their (Jones) quarterback (Cornwell) was and he made a great throw right before halftime.”

Scrambling out of the grasp of Sequoyah lineman Ethan Cole and linebackers Will Shea and Hunter Webster, Cornwell rolled to his right and spotted Case wide open behind Eagles defensive back Colten Graves  for the touchdown with 33 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

“Up until that point, we had Jones’ offense pretty much contained,” Iams said.

“I can’t fault the effort of these kids.

“They gave it everything they had in the postseason, and played with a lot of heart, especially when a lot of people doubted them at Week 5 of the season.

Sequoyah trailed 3-0 in the first quarter as Jones got a 33-yard field goal from Nathan Lee.

A strong defensive effort by the Eagles kept the game close going into the second quarter.

Sequoyah’s offense, which gained 149 total yards, tied the game at 3-3 on Chance Schultz’s 22-yard field goal with 7:28 remaining in the first half.

Sequoyah quarterback Daniel Moniz finished the game with 7-of-17 passes for 66 yards.

The junior signal-caller — in his first season as the Eagles’ starter — capped off the season with 3,205 yards of total offense and 31 touchdowns.

Jones’s defense held Moniz without a touchdown and 80 rushing yards.

According to Iams, “We were moving the ball on them (Jones) but never could get the break we needed to get in the end zone.”

Late in the game, Iams said he knew his team needed to go for it on fourth down at the Jones 45 yard line, and the Longhorns defense stepped up to make a big stop.

“Sooner or later, we were going to be in a position to go for it, and time was ticking away,” Iams said.

Moniz, who broke free for a 12-yard gain, got hit at the Sequoyah 40 yard line and Jones recovered the fumble with 2:22 remaining in the game.

From that point on, Jones ran out the clock and ended Sequoyah’s hard-fought run through the Class 3A playoffs.

The Eagles finished the season with a 7-6 record.

Jones (11-2) advances to the Class 3A State Semifinals to face Blanchard, who beat Hilldale, 42-0 in the other state quarterfinal game.
