Coale's Sooners gear up for showcase

NORMAN — They’re calling it the Friday Night Tailgate, and why not? Football’s not the only sport Oklahoma plays; it only seems like it this weekend.

With that in mind, the Oklahoma women are throwing their own get-together on the eve of the Sooners’ and Irish meeting at Owen Field.

The Lloyd Noble Center doors will open, at no cost, at 5 p.m. At 6, coach Sherri Coale’s OU women’s basketball team will commence with a 90-minute scrimmage.

The doors are opening an hour early so the players may greet their fans before scrimmaging.

Also, during the scrimmage, Coale will be mic’d up and occasionally stopping the action on the court to communicate with fans.

Coale might explain the play the Sooners are trying to run or let everybody in on a particular teachable moment.

The season is very close.

On Thursday, the Sooners play host to Oklahoma Christian for their first exhibition game. On Nov. 6, they close out their exhibitions with a meeting against Henderson (Nev.) State. On Nov. 10, the regular season opens with an afternoon game at Creighton, and on Nov. 14, UCLA visits Lloyd Noble Center for the season’s home opener.

Tonight’s scrimmage should be of interest if only because Coale has indicated her rotation might include the entirety of her roster, which returns everybody who was playing at the end of last season but Jelena Cerina, who graduated.

“They’re all three ready,” Coale has said of newcomers Nicole Kornet, Portia Durrett and Maddie Manning.

The Sooners, though, have lost sophomore post Kaylon Williams for the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Available again, however, should be Lyndsey Cloman, who also plays inside, coming off reconstructive knee surgery for a torn ACL that caused her to miss all of last season.

Tonight should offer an indication of how OU plans to put its pieces together.

On the first day Oklahoma softball coach Patty Gasso thought it was better to go with Michelle Gascoigne over Keilani Ricketts against Arkansas’ bats, the Sooners beat the Razorbacks by five runs.

A day later Gasso had the same thought. OU prevailed by 13 runs.

Oklahoma State University played catch up the entire game of Saturday’s series finale with West Virginia at Allie P. Reynolds, and never could quite get over the hump.
The Cowboys would respond after each Mountaineer score but it wouldn’t be enough as they lost the finale 5-4 on Senior Day.

Officials, following the second serious skirmish of the game, walked off the field and the game was called, the South leading the North 12-10 at Paul Bell Stadium.

Pacers, Heat start bracing to square off again
A year ago when Miami and Indiana faced off in the postseason, there were blood-drawing hits, flagrant fouls, technical fouls, choke signs being directed toward LeBron James and more than a few sharp-tongued comments.
