Verdigris spoils Sequoyah’s Homecoming

Upshaw, O’Dell shoot Cardinals past Eagles

SEQUOYAH — The Verdigris Cardinals posted a sweep against the Sequoyah Eagles on the basketball court Friday night at Olan Graham Field House.

The Lady Cardinals won 47-35 while the Verdigris boys cruised 68-36.  Both Verdigris teams, ranked fourth in class 3A, improve to 13-2.

The Lady Eagles and Eagles are now 5-9 and 4-10, respectively.  It was homecoming for Sequoyah.  Hunter Thompson was named homecoming queen.

Verdigris hosts Tulsa Metro Christian on Tuesday and then will be participating in the Port City Classic in Catoosa, beginning on Thursday.

Sequoyah will see its next action in the Pryor Tournament.  The Eagles play Pryor on Monday at 8:45.  The Lady Eagles face Collinsville at 4:15 Tuesday.

Baileigh O'Dell had a game high 24 points for the Lady Cardinals.  Aubryana Matussak finished with 11 points to pace the Lady Eagles.

Verdigris never trailed and led 16-7 after the first quarter.  O'Dell had all but three of her team's points in the frame.

The Lady Cards stretched their advantage to 29-15 at the half.  Sequoyah, however, closed within 36-26 after three periods.

Verdigris put the game away though with a 7-0 run to open the final stanza.

The Lady Cardinals had even more good news than the victory on the basketball court.  Assistant coach Stacy Risenhoover was the beneficiary.

The National Federation of High School Coaches selected Risenhoover as the Oklahoma Girl's Soccer Coach of the Year.

Tyler Hundley and Chase Bryant both had solid games off the bench for Verdigris.  Hundley had 10 points and eight rebounds while Bryant finished with nine points and seven boards.

Blake Mills had 12 points to pace the Eagles.  Teammate J. J. Filby came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Cardinals were ahead 22-9 after the first quarter.  Upshaw made his first four attempts from three point country en route to 14 points in the frame.

Verdigris pulled away further from there.  Sequoyah did not help its cause with just two points in the second period.
