STILLWATER — If there’s one thing college football coaches always dread, it’s the 11 a.m. kickoff. Just the thought of whether or not the players will be awake enough to play makes most coaches reach for the antacids with their bacon and eggs.

Fortunately for Oklahoma State University coach Mike Gundy, that scenario hasn’t happened since the 2004 Bedlam game. The Cowboys kicked off at noon against Missouri State in 2008, but since then have typically played in the afternoon and evenings.

Now, a week after what will likely be the Cowboys latest kickoff, Oklahoma State will take the field for its earliest kickoff of the season when it takes on the University of Louisana at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“I really don’t know how I feel about (the kickoff time), I’m just ready for the game,” Oklahoma State junior running back Jeremy Smith said. “There’s a lot of people doubting us now because of last week’s game (against Arizona). I’m just ready to get out there regardless of what time it is. I don’t care if it’s 8 a.m.”

Smith may not care, but some of his teammates aren’t as excited about the 11 a.m. start.

“Really, we’d like for it to be around 2 p.m. or so,” junior safety Shamiel Gary said. “That way we’re done early enough to have somewhat of a Saturday night, but we don’t have to wake up so early.”

One thing is certain, Gundy will have his team ready regardless of the kickoff time Oklahoma State dropped its first nonconference game since the 2009 season.

  • Texas Longhorns men's track coach retires

    Texas men's track coach Bubba Thornton is retiring after 18 years and 12 conference championships.
    According to a statement from the school on Monday, Thornton and athletic director DeLoss Dodds mutually agreed to terminate the coach's contract effective Aug. 31. The Longhorns won this year's Big 12 indoor and outdoor championships and finished sixth at the NCAA outdoor championships.
