RSU slates MLK Day of Service

CLAREMORE — Rogers State University students, faculty and staff will celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of service throughout the campus and community, on Jan. 21.

The university’s opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the Centennial Center Ballroom. The Mt. Zion Baptist Church Choir will perform pieces specifically chosen for this occasion and several students will present excerpts from some of King’s famous speeches and writings.
A canned food drive will benefit the RSU Residential Life food pantry. Donations can be dropped off at the opening ceremony, any of the volunteer sites or at the RSU Centennial Center. 
For the second year, winners of the RSU MLK Art and Poetry contest also will be announced during the opening ceremony. 
Immediately following, individuals will have the opportunity to sign up for afternoon volunteer projects. Organizations involved include the Claremore Veteran’s Center, Rogers County Youth Services, RSU Bit by Bit Therapeutic Riding Center and the William W. Barnes Children’s Advocacy Center.
The first 80 volunteer participants will receive a free MLK Day T-shirt. The event is sponsored in part by a grant from Montana Campus Compact.

    The Claremore Public School District will participate in the USDA Summer Food Service Program from May 20 through Aug. 9 for children 18 and younger. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-8 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m at Roosa Elementary, 2001 N. Sioux
