McClaren commends delay of A-F grading plan

CLAREMORE — The state Board of Education is delaying the release of a new system that grades Oklahoma's schools until Oct. 25 allowing for further review by officials.

Officials had planned to release the new grades Monday, but the Board of Education voted to delay the release and local school officials appreciate the consideration.

“We want to commend the state board for listening to parents and educators,” Superintendent Mike McClaren said.

The new system evaluates schools on an A-to-F grading scale and has been the topic of controversy as many school officials took issue with the calculation method.

“We look forward to working out some of the kinks,” McClaren said.

He explained that system weighs some scores higher than others allowing for small groups of children to “tip the scales” for everyone.

The fact that they were giving attendance factors or graduation rate more weight than other factors, such as  AP courses is part of the issue, he added.

“We welcome accountability we just want to make sure it is fair to the students,” McClaren said.
