Church news: Knitting group and Shepherd's Cross living nativity

CLAREMORE — Knitting group

First United Methodist Church is starting a volunteer group of knitters and crocheters to make baby blankets and baby hats for area hospitals. They meet at 10 a.m. each Thursday at the church’s Volunteers Office. For more information, visit careministries@claremorefumc.org or call 918-640-0143.

Volunteers are also needed to pack food bags and help serve in the church’s Good Samaritan Food Pantry, Tuesdays and Thursday, from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Volunteer one day a week, one week a month or every week, one hour a day or all day. For more information, call Laurie Ault at 341-4580.

Living Nativity & Pecan Festival

Shepherd’s Cross Living Nativity and Pecan Festival continues tomorrow — the final day — from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Living Nativity is a walk-through event complete with animals and costumed characters inside a gambrel roof barn at Shepherd’s Cross, an authentic working farm, just north of Claremore.

Visitors will take a step back in time with demonstrations of spinning, weaving and wool working throughout the day. The event also includes children’s crafts and an audio-visual program. Apple cider and cookies will be served.

This year the Living Nativity will feature two drama performances: Elisabeth — the story of Christ’s birth from Elizabeth’s (John the Baptist’s mother) perspective; and The Inn Keeper’s Wife — the story of Christ’s birth from the Innkeeper’s Wife’s perspective. These will be offered every hour with Elisabeth being from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and The Inn Keeper’s Wife from 5-8:30 p.m.

This is pecan harvest season on the farm. Farm fresh native pecans will be available for purchase.

The event is available free of charge. Donations are accepted, and are tax-deductible. Suggested donation is $2 per person.
