Fred Melton Jr.

CLAREMORE — Memorial services for Fred Melton, Jr., will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the First Christian Church of Claremore, Fifth & Florence, at 11:30 a.m.

Fred passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at age 88.  Born Sept. 2, 1924, in Claremore to Mattie (Newman) Melton and Fred M. Melton, Sr., he was educated locally and graduated from Verdigris High School in 1942.

Fred served his country in World War II in the European Theatre. Following his honorable discharge, he continued his education and began his career at Peabody Coal Company. Starting in the lab, he was promoted to assistant superintendent of the local mine, and later, regional materials manager before his retirement in 1983.

Besides spending time with his family, Fred’s favorite pastimes included ping pong, fishing and golf, his favorite sport. His long-time foursome, Raymond Bassmann, Phil Smith and dearest cousin, Lloyd Melton, and their wives enjoyed numerous trips around the country, to Hawaii, Acapulco, Mexico, and the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland.  He achieved two holes-in-one in his lifetime, one locally at Heritage Hills, and the other at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

After his retirement, Fred kept busy with gardening, sharing his famous tomatoes, and woodworking, building a shop behind his home.  A member of the Rogers County Woodworkers, his passion was to build and give away his various projects – quilt racks, trivets, and jewelry boxes, to name just a few.  He also created custom items and furniture for his children, including a podium and wrap-around piano bar for his son’s restaurant and an heirloom wine cabinet of his own design for his daughter.

Remembered as funny, kind, considerate, generous, and loving, Fred shared his big smile, bright blue eyes and quick wit with all who crossed his path.  He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Nan), his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Dayna Melton, and his grandchildren, Zachary, Hillary and Grant, all of Claremore.   Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maxine, his brother LeRoy and his sister, Marguerite Morgan.

Those who wish to honor Fred’s memory with a memorial contribution may do so by contributing either to his favorite sport, Heritage Hills Golf Course, RCPFA, 3140 Tee Drive, Claremore, OK 74019, or the First Christian Church of Claremore, 200 E. Fifth Street, Claremore, OK 74017.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 15th, at the family home, 400 E. Seventh Street, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
