Jocie 'Jo' Christy

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Jocie “Jo” Christy will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Jan., 7, 2013 at First Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Stigler City Cemetery in Stigler, Okla.  Visitation will be held today from 1-5 p.m. with family receiving visitors from 2-5 p.m.

Jo passed away on Wednesday, Jan., 2, 2013. She was 85.

Born March 11, 1927 to Elzye and Nellie McGhey Sturdy, Jo received her education in her birth community, graduating from Stigler High School. After graduation, while living at the same boarding house as her future husband, was introduced by a friend, to Harold Christy and about a year and a half later on January 28, 1950 the two married in Tulsa. Harold seemed to think she was drawn to him because he drove a yellow Ford convertible.  Their marriage was gifted with two children.

Working for the Swift Company, Dictaphone and McDonnell Douglas, her most treasured position of all was being a wife and mother.   After the birth of their first child, Jo stayed home to raise her children.  Actively involved with her children’s activities she chaperoned numerous events, served as Girl Scout leader but most importantly she saw that they attended church regularly and instilled God’s Word into their hearts.  This same role continued when the grandchildren came along and made ‘grandmother’ her favorite thing to hear.

Jo’s children referred to her as giving and that is evident by her 37 years as a volunteer at Claremore Regional Hospital and she also gave of her time to the local Meals on Wheels program.  Although proud of these things, her greatest passion was teaching the 3rd grade Sunday school class.  Her church ministry and church family were considered a treasure and her love of the Lord and her belief in the truth of God’s Word allowed her to face death with a hope and longing for going home and being reunited with other family.

This wife, mother, grandmother and friend will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Those that survive are her husband Harold of their home; children, Desiree Kennedy and husband Gregg of Verdigris and Arthur Christy of Texarkana, Arkansas; grandchildren, Stephen Woodson and wife Tabatha, Cameron, Jordon and Taylor Woodson; sister, Pat Reavis and numerous nieces and nephews.  Jo was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Flint and John Sturdy; sisters, Mildred Mace, Velma Buntin, Jerry Hughey and Ruth Baker.

In Lieu of flowers or other condolences, a donation can be made in Jo’s name to the 1st Baptist Church Children’s Department at 107 E. Will Rogers Blvd. Claremore, OK 74017.
