Thomas C. “Dude” Goodmon

CLAREMORE — Services for Thomas C. “Dude” Goodmon will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan., 5, 2013 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service. Visitation will be today from 1-7 with family receiving visitors from 5-7 p.m.

Dude passed away Wednesday, Jan., 2, 2013. He was 89 years old.

Born in Neodesha, Kansas on March 14, 1923, to Thomas and Cleo (Greer) Goodmon, Dude received his education in his birth community. In an effort to help support his family Dude worked in his brother’s blacksmith shop before acquiring his union card at the age of 18. He then began a lifelong career as a welder/pipe fitter.  Dude was a member of the Pipe Fitters Local Union #430 and was very proud of the fact that he held membership there for 71 years.

In 1946 Dude married Ethel May Pickett and this union was gifted with four children.

Dude was a man with a huge heart and a giving spirit. He exemplified this for 40 years in his faithful care of his son Tommy, who was injured in a car accident.

It was also shown in a quote that Dude lived his life by “I would rather give to someone who needs it more than I do, and that’s why I will always be broke….and that’s OK”.

After his first wife of 54 years passed away, Dude married Shirley Garber Deckard. The two of them blended their families and enjoyed their senior years together.

Dude enjoyed dancing, singing, and playing music.  He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener.  Dude loved to can the bounty of his garden and was known for his tam peppers and pickled okra.

This husband, father, grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who knew him.  Dude is survived by his wife Shirley of their home;  children,  Mike Goodmon and wife Pam, Tami Peck and husband Ralph, Sharon Zwosta and husband Norbert, Eddie Deckard and wife Beth; grandchildren, Renee Smith, Mason Goodmon and wife Andrea, Alicia Gorman and husband Tom, Chad Smith and wife Carisa, Dana Goodmon, Travis Peck and wife Jessica, Hayley Westwood and husband Wade, Adam Zwosta, Ashlei Allen and husband Justin, Travis Deckard and wife Janean, Rachel Sandusky and husband Nick, Phillip Deckard, Jason Deckard, Ryan Deckard and wife Katie; great grandchildren, Lindsay, Abigail, Jacob, Kelsie, Ella, Harison, Crosley, Preston, Rilee and his favorite after school playmates Nicolas and Lexi; brother Pete Goodmon ; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Dude was preceded in death by his wife Ethel May, daughter Shirley, son Tommy and three brothers.
