CLAREMORE —
A celebration of the life of Brian Michael Phillips will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012 at Lifechurch.tv Owasso Campus. Burial will follow in Lone Elm Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Friends may visit the funeral home from noon until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct 10 with family receiving visitors from 6-8 p.m. Brian passed away from this earthly home to his heavenly home on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 after a heroic battle with Cystic Fibrosis. He was 28.
Brian was born in Pomona, Calif. on Aug. 11, 1984 to Floyd “Rick” and Karen (Scholes) Phillips. In 1993 the Collinsville area became home to the Phillips family. Brian received his education in Collinsville, graduating from high school with the class of 2002. He continued his studies at Northeastern State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in education and was currently employed with Collinsville Public Schools as a history teacher and coach. Brian’s long time love of sports began when he was just a boy and continued through adulthood. He loved having the opportunity to coach the kids he spent so much time with and had fulfilled his passion of sports broadcasting this year being the voice of the Collinsville Cardinals.
On Oct. 19, 2007, Brian married the love of his life, Ashley Kooken. Their wedding ceremony took place at Memorial Heights Baptist Church in Claremore. Brian and Ashley are expecting their first children (multiples) in early June of next year and Brian was so excited to be a daddy. The couple has made their home in Oologah.
Brian had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a passion for the Holy Word of God. Brian and his wife were actively involved at Lifechurch.tv Midtown Tulsa Campus. This included being a part of the Host Team, which focused on creating a comfortable environment so people would be open to hearing God’s Word. His faith in God offered hope in his fight with the disease that had been a part of his life since birth. Knowing God’s plan for his life gave peace in that battle. A gifted writer, Brian both dealt with his challenges and encouraged others with those same circumstances by creating a blog on the topic of Cystic Fibrosis.
A compassionate and kind hearted man, Brian was always more interested in the needs of others than his own -- exemplifying Christ likeness. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the hearts and lives of all who knew him. He is survived by his, wife Ashley and Phillips’ babies of Oologah; parents Floyd “Rick” and Karen Phillips of Collinsville; brothers, Keith Phillips and wife Jen of Azusa, Calif., Kevin Phillips of Collinsville; sister, Cindy Phillips of Calif.; father and mother- in-law, Doug and Mechele Kooken; sister-in-law, Kelsey Kooken; brother-in-law, Scott Kooken, all of Oologah; grandparents, Gene and Christine Kelly of Collinsville; grandfather, Norman Scholes of Evington, Va.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins. Brian was preceded in death by grandparents, Harold and Irene Phillips.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the Brian Phillips Memorial Fund at American Bank of Oklahoma in Collinsville for Ashley Phillips and their future children and/or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Tulsa Sooner Chapter) 2642 E. 21st St. Suite 100, Tulsa, OK 74114 or online at www.cff.org.
