Jon Ross Townsend

CLAREMORE — Services for Army Pfc. Jon Ross Townsend will be 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at First Baptist Church.  He will be laid to rest at Lone Chapel Cemetery with full military honors under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.  Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home between the hours of 4-8 p.m. this evening.  The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00.

Jon made the ultimate sacrifice for his country when he laid down his life on Sept. 16, 2012 in Afghanistan.  He was 19.

Born Oct. 28, 1992 in Claremore to Robert Wayne and Karen (Harrison) Townsend, Jon received his education in Sequoyah Schools.  Two days following high school graduation, in May of 2011, he entered Army boot camp, the culmination of many months of preparation. On Feb. 25, 2012 Jon and his beloved soul mate Brittany Taylor Carden married while Jon was home on leave, at Sageeyah Baptist, his home church.

Jon was a gifted child, both academically and musically.  He performed “Amazing Grace” solos while standing on a chair to the delight of his family and could recite the Pledge of Allegiance and his multiplication tables before beginning school.  As a boy, Jon’s hero was “Walker, Texas Ranger,” whose reputation for fighting the bad guys and rescuing the good girls was especially appealing and may have been the cause of his interest in body building.  Jon was actively involved in the 4H program where his chickens, turkeys and geese earned numerous ribbons and even cash prizes. Greatly influenced by Michael Mefford, a former band teacher, Jon played almost any instrument he picked up, including the trumpet, drums and guitar.  He was strong in his Christian faith and enjoyed sharing his faith with others, hoping someone might accept, believe and have eternity to praise and worship God.

A deep devotion to his family was evident in Jon’s treatment of his mother and grandmother.  He never left home without making sure they knew of his love for them.  He loved his family and friends and expressed it often.  Jon leaves behind his wife, Brittany Townsend; Lois Harrison, granny; Karen (Katy Harrison) Nelson, mother; Aunt Honee Sue (Harrison) Grumbein and spouse Keith Grumbien and their children Kobe, Kalvin, and Katelyn of Foyil; respected father-like figure Roland Long of Foyil; Jeremy Nelson, brother, and spouse, Courtney and their children Austin, Jeremiah, Keegan and Xelia Nelson; Andrew Bingham; and Caleb and Myah Smith; Jennifer (Nelson) Tucker and spouse Paul Tucker and children Tanner and Addison; Nancy (Roberts) Carden, mother-in-law; James L. Carden, Jr., father; Cherish (Carden) Moye, sister, and husband Brent Moye; and James Larry Carden, III, brother; and faithful four-legged friend, Teddy.  He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Wayne Townsend, cousin Shawn Mersa, maternal grandfather (Bud) or Carroll Harrison, Jr., Sharon Rice (Harrison) aunt.
