Dale H. Dishman, age 68, and resident of Dewey, Okla., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, in Yukon, Okla.
Dale Dishman was born on May 13, 1944 in Chelsea, Okla. He was the son of Harvey Dishman and Maudie (Russell) Dishman. He was raised in Chelsea, graduating from the Chelsea High School in 1962. Dale was very athletic and was an outstanding basketball player. He attended Tulsa University (TU) on a basketball scholarship. After his freshman year at TU, he transferred to Bacone College and continued playing basketball for another year. He attended Northeastern State University (NSU) and received his Bachelors degree in education in 1966. He also played basketball while at NSU. After graduation, Dale taught school in Bowring, Oklahoma for a few years, before teaching in Hominy, Oklahoma. While at Hominy, Dale was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969, serving during the Vietnam War.
After he received his Honorable Discharge, Dale continued his education at NSU, earning his Masters degree in Guidance & Counseling in 1973. At NSU, he was also a Graduate Assistant and basketball coach.
On August 9, 1973, Dale married Kittie Farmer. They were blessed with three children, Kristie, Kyle and Kindra.
After receiving his Masters degree, Dale, Kittie and the children made their home in Fairfax, Oklahoma, where he coached the team to a State Basketball Championship in 1978. He moved to Bartlesville in 1979 and coached at College High School for several years; then coached at Sooner High School, Central Middle School, and Madison Middle School.
Dale and the former Elaine (Ewing) Davis were married on February 14, 1990 at the Grace-Epworth United Methodist Church, Bartlesville. In 1996, Dale retired after 25 years from teaching and coaching and he and Elaine have lived in retirement in Dewey since that time.
Dale holds several awards and honors. He was ranked as the Highest Scoring Basketball Player in Oklahoma until 1993. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, loved teaching and coaching and he especially loved his family He was a member of the Dewey United Methodist Church, American Legion, and NRA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Russell Dishman. Dale is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Kristie Carlson and her husband, Scott, of Enid, Oklahoma, Kyle Dishman and his wife, Tamara, of Yukon, Kindra Dishman of Checotah, Oklahoma; Angela Gilliland and her husband, Bradley, of Bartlesville; six grandchildren, Kelby and Seth Carlson, Andrew Dishman, Marissa Hale, Ryan Duncan and Devin Gilliland; sister, Linda Dishman-Stafford and her husband, Gen. Thomas Stafford, of Satellite Beach, Florida; two brothers; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Visitation for Mr. Dishman will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home, 710 S. Dewey Ave. Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM in the funeral Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 in the Dewey United Methodist Church, 618 N. Delaware, Dewey, Okla. Interment will follow in the Dewey City Cemetery.
