CLAREMORE —
Jim Sanders passed from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013. He was 84. Services for Jim will be at 1:00 p.m., Thurs., Jan. 17, 2013 at Verdigris Assembly of God. Burial will follow at Floral Haven in Broken Arrow, under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday Jan. 16 from 1-7 p.m., with family receiving visitors from 5-7 p.m.
Born on April 11, 1928 in Tulsa, to James Marion and Ethel (Hanover) Sanders, Jim was reared and educated in Nowata. Following his schooling, Jim joined the Navy at the age of 17. He served his country overseas and following his honorable discharge, he returned to Oklahoma and began work in Tulsa. Jim learned the trade of engraving while working in manufacturing, and took employment with Seismograph in Tulsa as an engraver. In 1986, he retired for about six months and then opened his own engraving business.
On Jan. 21, 1994 he and Beverly L. (Ball) Riggs were married and they made their home in Verdigris. At that time, he moved his business into his home and never retired. Jim was a perfectionist in his work, which kept clients returning for his quality workmanship. With Beverly, he found not only a partner in marriage, but a business partner as well; Jim plied his trade while Beverly took care of the bookkeeping.
Jim had many hobbies. He loved tinkering with old cars and traveling with his family in his motor home to Colorado. Also, Jim taught himself to play the piano, and loved playing his own compositions each evening before he went to bed. Perhaps his greatest passion was spreading the word of God to all manner of people in his life. His concern for others and their spiritual well-being was his top priority, and he never left family or friends without sharing the truth of God’s grace and love. He had a great compassion for the people of Israel and supported them often.
A kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Jim leaves a treasure of memories to all who knew him. Those that survive include his wife Beverly of their home in Verdigris; his children Margo Thomas of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Jimmy Sanders and his wife Susan of Broken Arrow, Jamie Krumwiede and husband Jacob of Claremore, Julie Squires and husband Jeff of Ashland, Mo., and Janet Holmes and husband Steve of McAlester, Okla.; his grandchildren, Tallie Stevens of San Clemente, Calif., Andrew Sanders and wife Jenny of Broken Arrow, Sarah Markle and husband Alan of Belton, Mo., Jessica Owen, Travis Owen, Zachary Moore, and Trinity Ann Squires of Ashland, Joshua Sachs of Columbia, and Andrea Sachs of St. Louis, Mo.; his great-grandchildren, Asher and Charis Sanders, Elyza June, and Ruben Elias Markle; and his brother, Clarence Sanders and wife Rosetta of Harlingen, Texas.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Ty Thomas, his brother Charles Sanders, and sister June Stockwell.
