Geraldine 'Gerry' Matthews

CLAREMORE — A celebration of the life of Gerry Matthews will be Wednesday, July 25 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church.  She will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24; family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m.

Gerry went to her eternal heavenly home on Thurs., July 19 at the age of 87.

Gerry was born in Caribou, Maine on Nov. 15, 1924 to Lemuel and Flora (Hulbert) Ginn.  She received her education in her birth community. On Sept. 14, 1962, Gerry and Bill Matthews married in Dallas, Texas. This marriage was gifted with two sons.

A farm in the Keetonville area became home for the Matthews family in 1963 and Gerry worked tirelessly to care for her home and beloved family.  As grand and great grandchildren were added to the family circle her role of matriarch continued.  Referred to as a “gentle spirit,” Gerry was constantly helping others. She worked at the Election Board and volunteered at the Manger. Her activity in her church included Sunday School, Awanas and vacation bible school.  She exemplified the witness of a believer according to God’s Holy Word.  She truly was a “shining light” to all who knew her.

Mother, grandmother and woman of unshakeable faith, Gerry will be missed by all whose lives she touched.  She is survived by her sons, Mike Matthews of Claremore and Jack Matthews and his wife, Kathy, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; grandchildren Doug, William, Jessica and Christopher Matthews, Morgan Corbett, and Dianna Hinds and husband, Brandon; great grandchildren Alexander, Kayson, Nathaniel, Zachary, and Jackson; her siblings Doris Guiggey, Robert Ginn and wife, Arwood, and Ken Ginn; sister-in-law Ellen Battle and daughter-in-law Tammy Matthews Cook.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 38 years, an infant brother, granddaughter Samantha Matthews and sisters-in-law Crystal and Wynona Matthews.
