Don Warren Self

Claremore, OK — Don Warren Self of Claremore, a man who cherished life, his family and friends, and also loved spending as much time as possible at his beloved deer camp or fishing hole, departed his earthly home on Wednesday, June 23, 2009, to spend his eternity with his Lord. Don was born at Whitefield on Feb. 20, 1948, and was educated at Catoosa High School. He married the love of his life, Purlene Few, on August 3, 1966, at Beaver Mountain. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of their son, Steven.

Don recently retired from Autocrane of Tulsa.

Don was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda. He is survived by his dad, Paul (Pop), of Catoosa, Purlene of the home, Steven and his wife, Lisa, of Claremore, and his three treasured grandchildren, Jessica Self of Claremore, Clint Parker Self of McAlester and Colton Self of Claremore. Don always had a big smile on his face, but it got even bigger when one of those grandkids walked into the room. Don is also survived by his sister, Linda Allen and husband, Steve, of Morris, brother Olen Self and wife, Debbie, of Catoosa, and sister Lavern Self, also of Catoosa, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws, all of which are convinced that they were the favorite.

In addition to spending as much of his free time as possible hunting and fishing with his family and friends, he also cherished the time he spent tending to his cattle at his ranch in Alluwe. Don received no greater pleasure than going through that cattle gate and discovering a newborn baby calf.

Don looked so forward to family get-togethers, but not nearly as much as did those family members as he was always the life of the party. The stories he always had to tell and his knack for telling them was without equal.

The service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, June 26, at Rice Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow at Mountain Home (Beaver Mountain) Cemetery in Stigler. Visitation will be from noon to 8 Thursday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dale Self, Johnny Hays, Jerry Hays, David Ponder, Robert Crisp and Stephen Collier.

Farewell to all my hunting and fishing buddies. I treasured every moment we spent together, and I’m saving a special spot for you in my new home.

Memorial contributions in Don’s honor may be made to Hope Hospice, 1402 N. Florence Ave., Claremore, OK 74017.
