Mary Elizabeth Cook

CLAREMORE — Services for Mary Elizabeth Cook will be 2:00 p.m., Fri., Nov. 30, 2012 in the Chapel of the Garden at Rice Funeral Service.  Mary will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery following the service.  Family and friends may visit at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday.  Mary left this life on Sun., Nov. 25, 2012.  She was 77.

Born on March 9, 1935 in Checotah, Okla. to Wade and Verbie (Holdridge) Thompson, Mary received her primary education in Checotah.  After a move to Tulsa she was valedictorian of her graduating class at East Central High School.  She attended college at TU before marrying Phil Cook on Dec. 18, 1962 in Miami, Okla., making Dec. 2012 the month they would have celebrated their 50th anniversary. Verdigris has been the family home for 35 of those years.

Mary magnified her role as mother and homemaker.  She enjoyed nothing more than caring for her family.  Her children claim she would have taken on a grizzly bear to protect them and at one time in Yellowstone she almost had to.  She actively participated and supported them in their sports efforts and was the designated scorekeeper at their ball games.  Mary was also particularly fond of her four-legged “children” which included her dogs, Rascal, Lash and Rascal 2 and her favorite buckskin mare, Candy.

After Phil’s retirement the couple packed up the motorhome and for three months visited some of their favorite destinations.  With matching motorcycles they were able to enjoy the places they visited in a more intimate way.  While at home Mary bowled, cared for over 400 African violets at one time, and created a sanctuary for hummingbirds in her backyard.

Mary leaves her family with the example of her love of nature and love of family.  She is survived by her husband, Phil of their home in Verdigris; children Shawn Cook and wife, Crystl, of Cushing, OK and Shannon Cook of Owasso; stepchildren Casey Gilmore and husband, Bob, of Tulsa and Dewayne “Scooter” Cook and wife, Kim, of Jones, OK; grandchildren Kimberlee Harley, Summer Gilmore, Travis Cook, Mindee Cook Bade and husband, Tim, Matthew, Jordan and Sara Cook; great grandchildren Gavin, Nathan, Kadence, Mason, Carter and Reagan; and numerous special nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Jesse Wayne Thompson.

Memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1893, Memphis, TN  38101-9950.
