CLAREMORE — Memorial service for Vernon Wayne Leuthen will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Chapel with Pastors Stephen Jenks, Sam Nichols, and Randy Childers officiating.

Vernon passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at the Claremore Veterans Center at the age of 87.

The son of John Edward and Leona Belle (Mueller) Leuthen was born May 6, 1925, in Eugene, Mo.  Vernon served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He served overseas in Guam as a chaplain’s assistant.  After he was discharged, Vernon attended Southwest Baptist College outside of Springfield, Mo. While at school he met Rose Marie Goodrich.  They were married on June 8, 1947, in Kansas City, Mo. Vernon and Rose Marie made their home in Waco, Texas, where Vernon went to work for the Veterans Administration.

They later moved to Kansas and New York, before moving back to Missouri. They settled in the Joplin area where Vernon went to work for IBM.  He worked for many years as a data processor and later as a systems analyst.  He retired after 20 years of service. 15 years ago, Vernon and Rose Marie moved to Claremore to be closer to their son and daughter-in-law. They always lived on a farm and raised cattle.

Vernon loved to cut wood and mow, and built their own home.  He was a member of Midway Baptist Church. He gave his heart to the Lord as a teenager;  and served Him in many ways including as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and song leader at church. Vernon loved to sing.  He, Rose Marie, and their two children, Mickey and Rebecca, enjoyed singing together as a quartet.  In his spare time, Vernon also enjoyed reading.

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents;  brother, Reginald Durant “Reggie” Leuthen;  and daughter-in-law, Joyce Lea Leuthen.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Leuthen of the home;  son, John Michael “Mickey” Leuthen and wife, Pam of Claremore;  daughter, Rebecca Joe Cox and husband, Wayne of Albuquerque, N.M.;  brother, Howard Marshall Leuthen and wife, Ruby of Parkville, Mo.;  grandsons:  Jarrod Cummings and wife, Jennifer, and Drew Cummings and wife, Katy;  and great-grandchildren:  Conner, Kennedy, Blakelee, and Ella Kate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midway Baptist Church, 20404 S. 4230 Rd., Claremore, OK 74019;  Alzheimer’s Association;  or to the American Heart Association.
