Obama budget predicts $1.3T deficit for 2012

WASHINGTON D.C. — The White House on Friday confirmed a report that President Barack Obama’s new budget predicts a $1.3 trillion deficit for the ongoing fiscal year. The deficit would drop to $901 billion next year under the administration’s tax and spending policies.

In his budget submission on Monday the president will also repeat his call to raise the top marginal income tax rate for individuals making more than $200,000 a year and families earning $250,000 percent to a Clinton-era 39.6 percent rate as part of $1.5 trillion in tax hikes over the coming decade. That proposal alone raises almost $900 billion over the coming decade.

The election-year document is sure to get a brushoff from Republicans controlling the House. The White House says that Monday’s budget will contain many items from a September submission to a failed congressional deficit “supercommittee,” which deadlocked over tax increases and how much to cut popular benefit programs like Medicare.

The Obama budget will also reflect tight “caps” on agency operating budgets forged in last summer’s budget and debt limit pact between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner. Those include a $6 billion cut in the budget for core Pentagon operations and cuts to many domestic agencies as well.

But it’s commonly assumed that presidential politics will prevent Democrats and Republicans from renewing efforts for a broader budget agreement, though negotiations on Capitol Hill are ongoing in efforts to renew jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed and a two percentage point cut in payroll taxes and prevent a 27 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors that’s the product of an outdated funding formula.

The figures were first reported in The Wall St. Journal, which viewed leaked draft budget documents.

The Journal also says the president will propose a six-year, $476 billion highway and surface transportation bill and $360 billion from curbs to federal health care programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

There’s also an immediate $350 billion for job-creating measures, less than presented in Obama’s $447 billion September jobs plan.

The White House warned earlier this week that its economic assumptions — predictions of the unemployment rate averaging 8.9 percent this year — now look too pessimistic. They were made in mid-November, before a recent spate of positive news about the economy. If the economy performs better than officially projected, it’ll mean a better fiscal performance for the government since greater growth means increased tax revenues.

“The forecast of the unemployment rate that will accompany the budget should be considered stale and out of date,” White House economist Alan Krueger said Thursday.

    The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals claimed summer bragging rights over the Claremore Zebras with a 9-1 victory Thursday night at Legion Field.
    Blake Battenfield tossed a complete game, fanning six Zebras in five innings. He gave up four hits and allowed a run in the bottom of the second inning.

  • Deaton named Oologah boys hoops coach

    Elk City’s Jim Deaton was hired earlier this month to lead the Oologah boys basketball program.
    For the past nine years, Deaton has guided the Elk City Elks in Class 4A.
    Under Deaton’s leadership this past season, the Elks were 10-16 and reached the area tournament.
    Deaton has been coaching for more than 20 years and has taken three different schools to the state tournament.

    The second boys game was the most competitive with the end result a 75-65 Gold victory.  Gold won 67-52 in the first boys game and the girls game was a 70-39 romp.

    No. 1 Oral Roberts scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat No. 4 Southern Utah 2-1 in game two of the 2012 Summit League Baseball Tournament, presented by Currington Mortgage, Thursday night.
     
    ORU (34-22) had just two hits through seven innings, but got three in the eighth, including a double by Jose Trevino to score Brandon Healy and tie the game. Cam Schiller followed with a single down the left field line to score Trevino, which proved to be the go-ahead run.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Kansas knocks out Texas

    The Texas Longhorns were sent home from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 4-2 loss against the Kansas Jayhawks on Thursday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    Kansas (22-33) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first and the Longhorns were never able to make up the deficit. It marked the first time Texas was eliminated after two games since 2001. In 2010, Texas went 0-3 in pool play at the tournament.

    Oklahoma State’s season came to an end Thursday at the Big 12 Baseball Championship as eighth-seeded Kansas State defeated the No. 5-seed Cowboys, 11-5, at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    In dropping its sixth consecutive game, OSU fell to 32-25.

    Another Big 12 Championship game ended in walk-off fashion on Thursday for the No. 25 Sooners as Evan Mistich legged out an infield single to score Erik Ross in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over No. 3 ranked Baylor.

    I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere, just put it in play,” said Mistich.  “I was just trying to get down the line as quick as aI could and beat the throw.”
