Tharp sparks Chelsea past Sequoyah, 59-48

SEQUOYAH — The Chelsea Green Dragons used a 33-point second-half performance to steal the spotlight from the Claremore Sequoyah Eagles.

Lonnie Tharp tallied a game-high 23 points to spark the Green Dragons to a 59-48 over Claremore Sequoyah on Senior Night at the Olan Graham Fieldhouse.

Chelsea led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 26-20 at halftime. Tharp scored 10 of his 23 points in the first 16 minutes as Chelsea took the lead for good at the 6:04 mark of the second quarter.

Tharp’s baseline jumper put Chelsea ahead 17-16 and Sequoyah never recovered.

The Green Dragons stretched their lead to 29-22 on Tharp’s three pointer and then 38-22 on Bo McSpadden’s basket in the paint with 3:46 left in the third quarter.

In the first four minutes after halftime, Chelsea rolled off a 14-2 scoring run.

Drew Tyler and Anthony Ricks joined Tharp in double figures with 11 points each.

Brett Price tried to rally the Eagles in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of his 21 points.

Alex McGoffin also had 10 points for Sequoyah.

  • Verdigris run-rules Claremore, 9-1

    The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals claimed summer bragging rights over the Claremore Zebras with a 9-1 victory Thursday night at Legion Field.
    Blake Battenfield tossed a complete game, fanning six Zebras in five innings. He gave up four hits and allowed a run in the bottom of the second inning.

  • Deaton named Oologah boys hoops coach

    Elk City’s Jim Deaton was hired earlier this month to lead the Oologah boys basketball program.
    For the past nine years, Deaton has guided the Elk City Elks in Class 4A.
    Under Deaton’s leadership this past season, the Elks were 10-16 and reached the area tournament.
    Deaton has been coaching for more than 20 years and has taken three different schools to the state tournament.

  • Price was Right in Green Country All-Star Game

    It was a clean sweep for Gold over Blue in a trio of Green Country All Star Basketball games Thursday at the Catoosa Indian Activity Center.
    The second boys game was the most competitive with the end result a 75-65 Gold victory.  Gold won 67-52 in the first boys game and the girls game was a 70-39 romp.

  • SUMMIT LEAGUE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: ORU comes from behind to win

    No. 1 Oral Roberts scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat No. 4 Southern Utah 2-1 in game two of the 2012 Summit League Baseball Tournament, presented by Currington Mortgage, Thursday night.
     
    ORU (34-22) had just two hits through seven innings, but got three in the eighth, including a double by Jose Trevino to score Brandon Healy and tie the game. Cam Schiller followed with a single down the left field line to score Trevino, which proved to be the go-ahead run.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Kansas knocks out Texas

    The Texas Longhorns were sent home from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 4-2 loss against the Kansas Jayhawks on Thursday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    Kansas (22-33) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first and the Longhorns were never able to make up the deficit. It marked the first time Texas was eliminated after two games since 2001. In 2010, Texas went 0-3 in pool play at the tournament.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: K-State eliminates Oklahoma State

    Oklahoma State’s season came to an end Thursday at the Big 12 Baseball Championship as eighth-seeded Kansas State defeated the No. 5-seed Cowboys, 11-5, at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    In dropping its sixth consecutive game, OSU fell to 32-25.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: OU stuns No. 3 Baylor 3-2

    Another Big 12 Championship game ended in walk-off fashion on Thursday for the No. 25 Sooners as Evan Mistich legged out an infield single to score Erik Ross in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over No. 3 ranked Baylor.

    I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere, just put it in play,” said Mistich.  “I was just trying to get down the line as quick as aI could and beat the throw.”
