Lady Eagles soar on Senior Night

SEQUOYAH — Claremore Sequoyah senior guard Berdena Anderson made her last home game memorable Thursday night, using a 12-point performance to spark the Lady Eagles past Chelsea, 33-25.

Anderson drained a pair of treys in the second quarter as the Lady Eagles clung to a 15-11 halftime lead.

Chelsea’s tenacious defense, led by point guard Danielle Wolf, held Anderson to one field goal and 4-of-4 free throws in the final 16 minutes.

Anderson’s second trey of the second quarter put the Lady Eagles ahead 13-8 with 1:31 remaining.

Shelby Miller converted a driving layup and Faith Wooten made 1-of-2 free throws to cap off Chelsea’s first-half scoring.

Chelsea, however, opened the third quarter with an offensive spark, and pulled within a point of the Lady Eagles  with 5:33 left.

After Miller’s basket in the paint, Faith Wooten answered with a baseline jumper to narrow the deficit to 16-15.

Sequoyah, however, went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by Anderson’s 12-foot jumper and Hunter Thompson’s give-and-go layup from Tana Dake to extend their lead to 21-15 with 3:55 remaining.

Destany Wooten halted the Lady Eagles’ scoring run with a three-pointer and Halee Tyler followed with a layup as Chelsea cut the lead to 21-20.

But, Paige Eaton’s off-balanced basket at the buzzer gave the Lady Eagles the momentum and a 23-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Eagles outscored Chelsea, 10-5 in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.

Lexi Moore tallied 6 of her 9 points in the fourth quarter to lead the charge.

Destany Wooten sparked the Chelsea offense with 9 points followed by Miller with 6.

  • Verdigris run-rules Claremore, 9-1

    The two-time defending Class 3A state champion Verdigris Cardinals claimed summer bragging rights over the Claremore Zebras with a 9-1 victory Thursday night at Legion Field.
    Blake Battenfield tossed a complete game, fanning six Zebras in five innings. He gave up four hits and allowed a run in the bottom of the second inning.

  • Deaton named Oologah boys hoops coach

    Elk City’s Jim Deaton was hired earlier this month to lead the Oologah boys basketball program.
    For the past nine years, Deaton has guided the Elk City Elks in Class 4A.
    Under Deaton’s leadership this past season, the Elks were 10-16 and reached the area tournament.
    Deaton has been coaching for more than 20 years and has taken three different schools to the state tournament.

  • Price was Right in Green Country All-Star Game

    It was a clean sweep for Gold over Blue in a trio of Green Country All Star Basketball games Thursday at the Catoosa Indian Activity Center.
    The second boys game was the most competitive with the end result a 75-65 Gold victory.  Gold won 67-52 in the first boys game and the girls game was a 70-39 romp.

  • SUMMIT LEAGUE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: ORU comes from behind to win

    No. 1 Oral Roberts scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat No. 4 Southern Utah 2-1 in game two of the 2012 Summit League Baseball Tournament, presented by Currington Mortgage, Thursday night.
     
    ORU (34-22) had just two hits through seven innings, but got three in the eighth, including a double by Jose Trevino to score Brandon Healy and tie the game. Cam Schiller followed with a single down the left field line to score Trevino, which proved to be the go-ahead run.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Kansas knocks out Texas

    The Texas Longhorns were sent home from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 4-2 loss against the Kansas Jayhawks on Thursday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    Kansas (22-33) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first and the Longhorns were never able to make up the deficit. It marked the first time Texas was eliminated after two games since 2001. In 2010, Texas went 0-3 in pool play at the tournament.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: K-State eliminates Oklahoma State

    Oklahoma State’s season came to an end Thursday at the Big 12 Baseball Championship as eighth-seeded Kansas State defeated the No. 5-seed Cowboys, 11-5, at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

    In dropping its sixth consecutive game, OSU fell to 32-25.

  • BIG 12 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: OU stuns No. 3 Baylor 3-2

    Another Big 12 Championship game ended in walk-off fashion on Thursday for the No. 25 Sooners as Evan Mistich legged out an infield single to score Erik Ross in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over No. 3 ranked Baylor.

    I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere, just put it in play,” said Mistich.  “I was just trying to get down the line as quick as aI could and beat the throw.”
