Tuesday Feb. 9, 2010 — On an afternoon when Claremore High School honored its past All-State basketball players and former coaches the current Zebras put on an impressive performance themselves Saturday at the Frank Mobra Field House.
Another solid team effect allowed the Claremore boys (16-1) to blow past Bartlesville, 81-55, while winning their 14th-straight contest.
For the Lady Zebras they proved they can win with only seven healthy players. Claremore (13-4) outscored the visiting Lady Bruins 20 points in the second half and claimed a 48-24 triumph.
Boys
Playing in their third game in as many days, Claremore proved the afternoon tip-off made no difference.
As has been their main routine during the current winning streak, the Zebras jumped out early. They also did it with their regular rotation of point-producing personnel.
Ten Zebras scored with Dakota Caudill leading the charge with 16 points. Alex Miller was next with 12 and Dakota Beller and Brad Janzen finished with 10 each.
Claremore outscored the Bruins in each quarter. The Zebras hit the visitors the hardest in the first and third quarters, totaling 47 points while allowing 24.
Bartlesville (6-10) received 14 points from both Travis Payne and Blake Hicks. Out of the remaining seven players with points scored, six had no more than four.
Claremore has not lost since the opening round of the Panther Classic at Harrah back on December 10.
Girls
Losing two starters to injuries while beating Skiatook last Thursday, then getting slammed in the fourth quarter at Coweta in a defeat Friday, the Lady Zebras needed a confidence rebuilding victory Saturday against Bartlesville.
They got it and did so in rather easy fashion.
As expected, team leaders Jordan Schultz and Taylor Swift provided the team's main scoring show.
This time, however, additional offensive help came from the remaining lineup and it arrived at the key moment.
Schultz hit a game-high 25 points and Swift followed up with 10.
The pair teamed for seven points in the third quarter as Claremore locked the contest up.
Timely buckets were also hit by Sierra Barnwell. Mainly a ball handler, it was the only two times she attempted shots from the field.
The third frame also saw Rebecca Campbell register her five points on a 2-pointer and a trey. The junior's three was the only one of eight team attempts to split the nets.
Both Claremore teams return to action at 6:30 and 8 tonight at home against Bishop Kelley.
