Tuesday Feb. 9, 2010 — Claremore Sequoyah and Lincoln Christian posted a split on the basketball court Saturday afternoon at Olan Graham Field House.
The Class 4A No. 16 Lady Eagles came from behind to clip the Lady Bulldogs, 33-27. In the boys game, Class 2A No. 18 Lincoln Christian outlasted Sequoyah, 55-43.
The Lady Eagles improve to 14-4 while the Eagles drop to 4-14 overall. Sequoyah will be very busy this week as they have four games scheduled.
The Eagles have their regular-season home finale Tuesday against Dewey.
Sequoyah then hits the road again for back-to-back games at Verdigris and Inola on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
GIRLS
The Lady Eagles used some clutch foul shooting down the stretch to offset a cold afternoon from the floor.
Sequoyah's Jennifer Morris led a balanced six-player scoring attack with a game-high 13 points. Kara Gleason finished with 12 points to pace Lincoln Christian (9-9).
The Eagles trailed most of the game but forged a 22-all tie after three quarters. Sequoyah eventually found itself up, 27-22 with 1:24 remaining.
Sarah Hearon's three-point play with just over a minute remaining cut the Bulldogs deficit to 27-25.
Morris, however, was clutch as she made both ends of a 1-and-1 free throw situation with 54.9 seconds left to boost the lead to 29-25.
Paige Eaton was then a perfect 4-of-4 at the line in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.
BOYS
The Bulldogs (10-8) used a trio of double figure scorers to beat the Eagles in a hard, fought affair.
Clay Wilson finished with a game-high 21 points while teammates Colton Layman and Trent Vogt scored 12 apiece.
Brett Price had 13 points to pace Sequoyah. Cale Owens and Trey Lambert both finished with eight.
Lincoln Christian scored the first nine points of the game and eventually led 13-6 after the first quarter. Wilson had all but one of the Bulldogs points in the frame.
Lincoln Christian extended to a 24-12 halftime advantage despite Wilson picking up his third foul with about two minutes left in the second quarter.
Wilson picked up his fourth foul at the 5:32 mark of the third quarter with the Bulldogs ahead, 26-14.
The Eagles took advantage and cut the deficit to 32-29 entering the final quarter. Lambert tallied six of his points in the third quarter.
The score was 46-37 in favor of Lincoln Christian when Wilson fouled out with 2:57 remaining. Layman, however, converted a key three-point play seconds later. From that point on, the Bulldogs were able to maintain a comfortable cushion. Sequoyah was just 9-of-19 at the free throw line.
The Eagles will have a home game in the district playoffs. They will face Tulsa Metro Christian on February 20.
