Brunson leads Oologah over Claremore 16-0

OOLOGAH — Mother Nature wasn’t stopping the Oologah Mustangs from their quest of getting a long-awaited victory over the Claremore Zebras.

With their starting tailback – Josh Collier – sidelined to apparent knee injury, the Mustangs rode the right-arm of senior quarterback Alec Brunson to a 16-0 victory over the Zebras in the ‘Battle of Rogers County’ Thursday night in the season-opener.

Brunson completed 8-of-12 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown as Oologah knocked off Claremore for the first time since 2006.
John Vansingel put Oologah ahead 7-0 in the first quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run and then Brunson completed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Hudgens in the second quarter to increase the Mustangs’ halftime lead to 14-0.

The Mustangs held Claremore’s offense in check all night long, keeping the Zebras out of the red zone and holding junior running back Chase Talbert to 139 yards on 25 carries.

A year ago, Talbert scored three touchdowns in the Zebras’ win over Oologah at Lantow Field.

Claremore quarterback Levi Rudd completed 6-of-16 passes for 54 yards and two interceptions.
