CLAREMORE —
Today is the big day for five area school board candidates as voters go to the polls and let their voice be heard. The polls are open until 7 p.m. today.
“There will be five elections - two in Catoosa, one in Claremore, one in Oologah and one in Foyil,” said Rogers County Election Board Secretary Julie Dermody. “Best of luck to the candidates,”she said.
The following candidates will be competing for the open school board seats: incumbent Tracy Chissoe and Patricia Cox, Catoosa Seat 2 Incumbent Robin Hughes and Jennifer Welch, Catoosa Seat 4 Incumbent Carri Stover and Robert Russell, Claremore Seat 2 Incumbent Brian Wigginton and Wally Doyle, Oologah Seat 2 Nickie Roberts, Brent Shoemaker and Don Storie, Foyil Seat 2.
According to the Oklahoma State Department of Education, school board members are required to complete a minimum of nine continuing education hours varied on the year of service and term.
Any newly elected candidate will be required to meet certain prior educational requirements. If they are not met school superintendents reserve the right not to seat them on the board, according to election officials.
The following candidates were unopposed: Jimmy Hall, Inola; Todd York, Verdigris; Lori Milam, Chelsea; Gene Haynes, Sequoyah; and Robyn Ann Dennis, Justus-Tiawah.
They will automatically be awarded the position as a result. incumbents Hall and York are currently serving on the Inola and Verdigris school boards.
In addition to the school board elections presidential primary elections will be held March 6.
