OTEMS transports 1-yr-old to confirm meningitis

Staff Reports

CLAREMORE —

OOLOGAH — OTEMS Ambulance Service was dispatched to Claremore Regional Hospital about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to transfer a 1-year-old boy to St. Francis Hospital for tests to confirm or rule out meningitis.

Larry Weatherford, with the Oklahoma State Department of Health, said his office has not confirmed any new cases of meningitis other than the seven cases at Oologah-Talala Public Schools. Two of those cases resulted in death.

Officials say the only way meningitis is spread is person to person, so anyone who has contracted the disease has had direct contact with an infected person.

Health officials urge anyone with concerns about fever, rash, vomiting, headache and stiff neck to visit a physician for a diagnosis. Weatherford added that the stiff neck symptom is a clear sign that meningitis may be the cause.
