Rogers County Blue Star Mothers takes grand prize

By Joy Hampton

December 24, 2009 — The public has spoken: Blue Star Mothers took first place at the Christmas tree decorating contest held at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs during the month of December.

Several charities participated, competing for prize money for their organizations.

Blue Star won the grand prize of $1,000, with Rogers County ABATE taking the $500 second place price, and the Rogers County Cherokee Association claiming the $200 third place prize.

Blue Star Mothers President Wanda Inman was excited about the win. She was even more excited about welcoming home local soldiers from overseas for the holiday. Inman’s son Steve, who serves in the Air Force arrived Tuesday evening. Inman said Blue Star Mothers would also be meeting another Rogers County soldier returning home to Oologah on Wednesday morning.

She asked that Rogers County residents remember the troops in their prayers as many remain overseas and in danger throughout the holiday season. Though they are separated by friends and family, they are still close to our hearts, she said.

Blue Star Mothers sent several boxes of welcome goodies and treats including everyday items we take for grated but which are highly appreciated by our troops. Boxes were mailed in order to arrive in time for Christmas.

The Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs donated the Christmas trees for the contest. Local organizations decorated them and the trees were put on display at the casino.

The trees were judged by the public from Dec. 5 until the winners’ announcement during Claremore’s Santa Cash drawing at 1 p.m. on Dec. 19 at the casino.

The decorated trees will remain on display throughout December.
