Grass fire burns more than 500 acres near Oologah

OOLOGAH — Brush fires torched more than 500 acres of  Northwest Rogers County near Oologah Thursday afternoon.

The first crews were called out at 3:10 p.m. according to Northwest District Fire Chief, David Puckett.  Crews from Verdigris, Tri-District, Rolling Hills and Collinsville came to the aid of the Northwest fire fighters.

Three fire fighters were treated for heat related injuries according to Brandi Pond, Oologah-Talala EMS assistant airector.

Two were returned to duty, but one unidentified fire fighter was evacuated for heat exhaustion. As thunder storms approached around 5:30 p.m., heavy winds gusting over 20 mph threatened to reignite the fires.

After nearly three hours the fires seemed to be under control, as dark clouds loomed bringing much needed rain at a most opportune time.
